A man stepped in front of a car late Thursday night and was killed on Highway 14 East.

According to Lieutenant David Evans of the Selma Police Department, John Thomas Chandler IV stepped onto the highway around 10:30.

Chandler left a nightclub, Evans said, and almost stepped in front of two moving cars. However, the cars managed to swerve and avoided hitting him. The third car didn’t.

Haynes Ambulance responded to the call, Evans said, and an evidence technician collected clothes, various items, and photos of the scene.

Officers also spoke with three witnesses and Evans added that Sergeant Jimmy Martin will be gathering further statements as the investigation progresses.

Chandler was brought to Lawrence Funeral Home, and remained there Friday as blood samples were sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences near Auburn University Montgomery.

Evans said that tests on the blood samples will determine if Chandler was under the influence of alcohol or narcotics at the time of his death.

Funeral services

for Chandler are at 2 p.m. today at New Live Oak Cemetery with the Rev. Doug Chappelle officiating and Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Chandler is survived by

his mother, Becky Mott of Selma; step-father, Steve Mott of Selma; son, Tyler Batten of Selma; two brothers, Dale McVay of Selma and Jeremy Chandler of Oklahoma and a number of other relatives.
