It’s ugly. It’s not very civic-minded. And it’s a problem in Selma.

Marcus Hopkins, director of General Services, is all too familiar with the problem. &uot;Unfortunately,&uot; Hopkins said, &uot;we have a lot of it that goes on. Out on Race Street, they dump out there a lot. And out on Lincoln Drive.&uot;

Another stealth dump site was discovered recently behind the old Wal-Mart shopping center on U.S. Highway 80. Hopkins said that often such sites are used to dispose of trash from construction projects.

Hopkins said that whenever his crews discover a stealth dump site, they examine the litter and debris searching for any possible information that might reveal who was responsible.

But litter control officer Clyde Carter said the culprits are getting harder to catch.

Hopkins said that if a landowner discovers his property has unknowingly been used as a stealth dump, the city will work with him to help dispose of it. &uot;If they call us we would come out and get it,&uot; he said.

But he knows that it’s an uphill struggle.
