It’s Christmas Eve and for many families, tonight and Christmas Day are favorite times to go looking at the different light displays around the city.

From the simple to the extravagant, there are many unique Christmas displays in Selma.

Take Doris Holland and her &uot;Peace on Earth&uot; angels. Her husband crafted those angels for her after seeing another set on display.

These beautiful, cherubic angels can be seen at 2 Union Street. The Hollands placed a spotlight outside their house so people will be able to see the angels.

Gerald Scrushy’s elaborate decorations out on Berry Road took him about a month to put up.

He’s been doing this for the past 10 years, except for last year when his wife died.

But many of those people stay near the road and look instead of wandering up the driveway.

He mentioned there were some people who even tour the inside of his home to see all the Christmas decorations he had there.

Scrushy said he has spent around $4,000 this year alone just to replace old lights and purchase new ones.

Scrushy added that he got the idea of his own home decorations when he and his family went driving around looking at other displays people put up.

There are other interesting displays around the city. All it takes is a little gas and a desire to spend time with the ones you love.

However, the weather may not cooperate with those wanting to go look at Christmas lights tonight. According to the Weather Channel, there will still be some showers falling around 6 p.m. tonight.

By 9 p.m., the forecast said, the weather should be partly cloudy. It is predicted to remain that way through Christmas Day.

And, for those interested in trivia, a website called Bill’s Antique Christmas Light Website (http://www.oldchristmaslights.com/) provides a history behind the outdoors Christmas decorations that have become a staple in Americana.

Incidentally, the first lighted Christmas display (for a tree) occurred only three years after Thomas Edison invented the light bulb in 1879.

In 1895, the first lighted Christmas tree was put in the White House.

As for the outdoor variety, they did not come about until 1927. The outdoors lights available prior to then were dangerous and very expensive.
