Darriell Lamar Hollman

Darriell Lamar Hollman, 32, of Selma, died Tuesday, December 16, 2003, at a Birmingham hospital.

Services are at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at Shiloh Baptist Church, 1416 Selma Ave., with Pastor Eddie Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Memory Gardens Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline Hollman; one daughter, Mietravia Scott of Selma; one son, Darriell Acoff of Selma; parents, Walter and Ruth Hollman of Selma; one brother, Michael Gordon of Selma; three sisters, Sharon (David) Hunter, Bernestine Gordon and Tracey Boone all of Selma; five nephews, two special nephews, David Keonne Hunter and Kourtney Demone Gordon both of Selma; three nieces; mother-in-law, Ada Hollman of Selma; eight sisters-in-law;

and eight brothers-in-law.

Mr. Hollman served in the United States Navy. He attended Wallace Community College School of Nursing.

Eugene Young

Eugene Young, 78, of Selma, died Monday, December 15, 2003, at his home.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 20, at Greater St. Paul Baptist Church with the Rev. Kirk Ellison officiating. Burial will follow in Good Hope Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include a very special friend, Fannie Tyus; sons, John (Rosie) Benson of Birmingham; and Robert (Bo) Grandison of Florida; three daughters, Adrian (Willie James) Moppins of Selma, Dorothy Garrett of New York and Vashtie Black of St. Louis, Mo.; one brother, Willie Young of Florida; a host of grand and great-grandchildren; one son-in-law, one daugther-in-law; four brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; a host of nieces and nephews; a special friend, Lawrence Dillard of Selma; and several god-children.

He was preceded in death by a son, Samuel Eugene Young.

Rosie Lee Williams

Rosie Lee Williams, 89, of Selma, died Saturday, December 13, 2003, at a local nursing home.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 20, at Union Grove P.C. Church with the Rev. Ocie Acoff officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include four sons, Willie Williams Jr. of Nanuet, N.Y,, Robert Williams of Sea, Jimmie (Dorothy) Williams of Atlanta, Ga., and Oliver Williams of Detroit, Mich.; seven daughters, Johnnie M. Walker, Laura McSwain, Geneva Shine, Betty Minor and Carlena Foster all of Flint, Mich., Louise Johnson of Selma and Dorothy Jordan of Spring Valley, N.Y.; one brother, Levi Taylor of Mobile; two sisters, Beatrice Bogan of Flint, Mich., and Willie Mae Scott of Youngstown, Ohio; two step-children, Mollie Effinger and James Williams of Salsbury, Md.; two god-children, Jenis Allen and Lonnie Page of Selma; 49 grandchildren; 76, great-grandchildren; three sons-in-law; one daughter-in-law; two brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Active pallbearers are family and friends.

Walker M. Vaultz

Walker M. Vaultz, 60, of formerly of Selma, died Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at a veteran hospital in Bronx, N.Y.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later by J.H. Williams and Sons Funeral Home.

Earnestine Turner

Earnestine Turner, 63, of Ft. Deposit, died Tuesday, December 16, 2003.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 20, at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Howard Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Ft. Deposit Cemetery with Bell Funeral Home directing.

Charles Mitchell

Charles &uot;Boolie&uot; Mitchell, 50, of Selma, died Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at a local hospital.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 20, at Wayman Chapel AME Church, Summerfield, with the Rev. Joshua Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery with Bell’s Hudson Funeral Home of Luverne directing.

Survivors include one son, Denrone Micthell of Los Angeles, Calif.; two grandchildren, Denrone Jr. and Raven; three sisters, Doris, Lola (Lavon) and Betty; one brother, James (Lula) Mitvchell Jr. all of Selma; four uncles, Eddie (Bernice), Henry and Johnnie Moore and Leo Mitchell; six aunts, Annie Bean of Chicago, Ill., Shirley J. Harris of West Haven, Conn., Alice Minor, Hannah Lee Williams, Naomi Moore and Mary Shaw of Selma; one great-aunt, Catherine Johnson of Selma; one sister-in-law, Lula Mitchell; seven nephews; nine nieces; and a host of other relatives and friends.

James Carson

James Carson, 64, of Orrville, died Saturday. December 13, 2003, at his home.

Services are at 1 p.m.

Saturday, December 20, at New Bethel Baptist Church in Orrville, with the Rev. M.J. Perryman officiating. Burial will follow in the church

cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include brothers, Ollie (Izzie) Carson of Detroit, Mich., William

(Barbara) Carson, Arthur (Adeline) Carson, Neal (Johnnie) Carson all of Orrville; one sister, Sallie Mae Lawson of Phoenix City; three aunts, Vinell Bennett, Estella Mobley both of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Lizzie Pilgrim of Orrville; two devoted friends, Mike Molette and Hezekiah Dokes both of Orrville; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence Hobbs and Ledell Carson.

Mr. Carson was born March 12, 1939, in Orrville, to the late Ollie and Daisy Carson. He confessed Christ at an early age and joined New Bethel Baptist Church where he served faithfully as a deacon, later he was called to preach the gospel until his death.

He worked most of his life for Amerigas Propane in Selma. After retiring he continued serving in the Orrville community and surrounding areas.

Edith Foss Mason

Edith Foss Mason, 87, of Selma, died Tuesday, December 16, 2003, at a local hospital.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 20, at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Ron Stone officiating. Burial will follow in New Live Cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include her son, Col. U.S. Army Ret. Ralph A. (Jane) Mason Jr. of Reston, Va.; grandchildren, David Mason of Vestavia Hills, Claudia Mason of Atlanta, Ga., and Meredith Mason of Arlington, Va.; great-grandchildren, Jackson Mason and Abbey Kate Mason.

Active pallbearers are Tom Henry, Butch Henry and Ken Henry.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be made to the Salvation Army or the Selma Dallas County Public Library.

Mrs. Mason was elected Elder in the Presbyterian Church, Treasurer of Presbyterian Women, was a Sunday school teacher for 42 years, and was chairperson of the White Cross Society. She and her husband owned Selma Arms Company from 1950 to 1978.

Doris Anderson Williams

Doris Anderson Williams, 48, formerly of Selma, died Tuesday, December 9, 2003, in Cleveland, Ohio.

Services are at 12 noon Saturday, December 20, at Good Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. John L. Ward officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with J. H. Williams and Sons Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include one son, Andrew Williams of Cleveland, Ohio; one daughter, Megan Williams of Cleveland, Ohio; four brothers, Larry (Dorothy) Anderson and Michael Anderson of Selma, Jonathan Anderson and Christopher Anderson of Cleveland, Ohio; one sister, Lorie Anderson of Cleveland, Ohio; four grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Active pallbearers are family and friends.

The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the services.

Ms. Williams was fondly known as &uot;Pokie&uot;. She confessed Christ at an early age and joined Good Hope Baptist Church under the late Rev. A.C. Crosby.

Bernice Byner-Hunter

Bernice Byner-Hunter, 68, of Demopolis, died Friday, December 12. 2003, at a Demopolis hospital.

Services are at 12 noon Saturday, December 20, at Evening Star Baptist Church, Gallion with the Rev. Floyd James officiating. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery with Larkin and Scott Funeral Home directing.

Frances Shade-Hunter,

Frances Shade-Hunter, 95, of Demopolis, died Friday, December 12, 2003 at a Demopolis hospital.

Services are at 12 noon Saturday, December 20, at Christian chapel Baptist Church in Demopolis with the Rev. Fred Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Demopolis with Larkin and Scott Funeral Home directing.

The body will lie in state at the church on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.

Mary Martha Holland

Mary Martha (&uot;Marty&uot;) Holland, died Wednesday, December 17, 2003.

Services are at First Presbyterian Church, Saturday, December 20, with viewing from 10-11. Memorial celebration 11-11:45. Visitation luncheon 11:45-12:23 with Graveside services follows at 1 p.m., at Jefferson Memorial Gardens E. Hwy. 11, Trussville, with Ridouts Roebuck Chapel directing.

Survivors include her beloved and devoted husband, DeWitte; sons, Samuel Stinson (Bethany Conway) Holland of Dallas, John Kenneth Seymour (Madeleine) Holland of Los Angeles, Daniel Lamberth (Patricia Carlson) Holland of Bloomington, Ill., and Ping Yun (Sue) Li of Houston; grandchildren, Kirsten Elizabeth Holland, Berqamin Austin Holland, Peng Li, Nathaniel Carlson Holland, Elias Clark Conway Holland, Catherine Anne Carlson Holland, Kristopher Paladin Holland, Jim Holland Li, and Ruby Mary Elizabeth Holland: aunt, Polly Cox; cousins, Janet Buchanan, Frank Nicholls, Noelle Nicholls Kellum.

Mrs. Holland was born Feb. 20, 1928. A devout Christian, a faithful wife, loving mother, and consummate homemaker. The daughter of Ralph McKinley Stinson and Zennie Cox Stinson, she graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1945 and Birmingham Southern College 1948 where she pledged Alpha Chi Omega. She earned a Master of Library Science from Drexel University in 1968.

She was married to DeWitte Talmadge (&uot;Dutch&uot;) Holland on July 29, 1949. As his career in academia grew, the couple would live in 15 cities among nine states, raising three sons, serving their church, spreading joy, dancing, and building community wherever they found themselves. At an age when most retire, Dutch and Marty were called to interim ministry in the Presbyterian Church. Thus began a 15-year odyssey that took them to churches in Philadelphia, Lewes DE, Farmers Branch, Texas, Edinburgh, Texas, Webster, Texas, and Greenville, Texas, before a term at the First Presbyterian Church of Selma. An inveterate bibliophile, Marty worked as a professional librarian in Alabama, Pennsylvania, and Texas. She was a supporter of the SPCA and other charities.
