Men hung suspended from a massive crane as they made the finishing touches to the city’s Christmas decorations Monday morning.

Tommy Smith, director of Public Works, looked on as foreman Mickey Corson and public works employee Robert Smiley hung a length of garland from a massive wreath on the building adjacent to the Song of Selma Park.

Smith explained that they usually use a 50-ton crane to hang the wreaths, but this year they’re using only a 35-ton crane.

This is the reason why only three wreaths are being hung from the building adjacent to the Song of Selma Park instead of four.

Smith said that decorations fill the downtown area. Wreaths can be found on Broad, Selma and Alabama streets, along with lights in most of the trees. There are no wreaths on Water and Dallas, but there are Christmas lights on these roads.

Corson stated that Monday’s job took about four hours. However, public works employees began putting the decorations up the first week of November.

Corson also noted that the large wreaths each weigh anywhere from 200 to 300 pounds. The smaller ones weigh 65 pounds each.

According to Corson, the decorations will be lit on Wednesday.
