Ethel Mae Lewis

Ethel Mae Lewis, 83, of Selma, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at her daughter and son-in-law home, Alberta and Willie James Howard.

Services are at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Rev. F.D. Reese officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Memory Gardens

Survivors include four sons, Jack Lewis Jr., James Lewis, Jerry Lewis and Robert Lewis; three daughters, Ola Dee Rueben, Sarah Jackson and Alberta Howard, her loving and devoted caregiver; two brothers, Richard Fitts and Rev. L. Willie Fitts; three sisters, Florence Davis, Sylvia Hasberry and Sarah Williams; 23 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; three sons-in-law; three daughters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews; a granddaughter, who she raised as her own, Jacqueline Lewis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elder Jack Lewis Sr., her parents, Thorton and Rose Fitts, two sons, Joe Lewis Sr. and Kenny Lewis in infancy, three daughters, Ethel Lee Martin, Rosa Mae Holman and Doris C. Lewis in infancy, two brothers, Lawrence Fitts and Johnnie Fitts; two sisters, Alberta Batup and Hester Dial.

Active pallbearers are grandsons and nephews.

Flowerbearers are nieces and friends.

Mrs. Lewis was born Dec. 27, 1919, to the late Thorton and Rose Fitts in Browns. At an early age she confessed and joined and the Brown Station Church. She moved to Selma and joined Ebenezer Baptist Church in Rev. White leadership. She was a member of the Missionary Society Circle #2, until her health failed. She was the wife of the late Elder Lewis, from 1941 until his death in 1991. Twelve children was born to this union.

Mrs. Howard, daughter and caregiver for Mrs. Lewis, would like to give special thanks to Dr. Raymond Brignac and Nurse Ellen at Selma Medical Association PC and Cahaba Hospice, Inc. staff, especially Nurse Michelle and C.N.A. Charlotte.

Willie James

Johnson Sr.

Willie James Johnson Sr., 72, of Tyler, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at his home.

Services are at 12 noon Saturday, Nov. 22, at Camp Creek Baptist Church with Bishop C.J. Nicholson officiating. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Sadie M. Johnson; one son, Jerome (Sharie) Johnson; two daughters, Ann (Leon) Barley and Delois (Fondell) Smith; two brothers, Sam (Nellie) Johnson and George (Billie) Johnson; one sister, Laura Graham; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law; and three sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by a son, Willie J. Johnson Jr.

Active pallbearers are friends of the family.

Vicky Frances Cook

Vicky Frances Cook, 65, of Marion, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, at her home.

Services are at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at Kirk Funeral Homes Marion Chapel with the Rev. Lloyd Stockman officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Crest Memorial Gardens in Marion, with Kirk Funeral Homes Marion Chapel directing.

Survivors include her husband, Jimmy Cook of Marion; mother, Agnes Parker of Marion; two sons, Johnny Alan Cook and Larry James Cook both of Marion; one daughter, Vicky Ann Watson of Gastonburg; three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Vincent F. Parker.

Katie Merle Brock

Katie Merle Brock, 75, of Jones, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003 at a Selma nursing home.

Graveside services are at 2 p.m. Friday, November 21, at Wesley Chapel UMC Cemetery in Dixons Mills, with O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include sons, Jerry H. Lisenbe and Jimmy C. Lisenbe both of Mansfield, Texas, and Randy L. Lisenbe of Jones; sister, Mary (Gerald) Mooney of Selma and Bennie (Glen) Stringer of Thomaston; brothers, Frank (Jerry) Threadgill and Jim (Caroline) Threadgill all of Selma; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

LaTonya Hurt Turner

LaTonya Hurt Turner, 25, of Selma, did Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at a local hospital.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at Lily Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Leo King officiating. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery with J.H. Williams and Sons Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include her husband, Robert L. Turner Jr.; parents, Leola (Lester) Jones of Selma and Rev. Freddie Hurt Sr. of Selma; two sons, Kervon R. Turner and Robert L. Turner III of Selma; two daughters, Shaquita S. Hurt and Raimya J. Turner of Selma; four brothers, Freddie B. (Autumn) Hurt Jr. of Ft. Campbell, Ky., Marques D. Jones of Selma, Carey B. Hurt and Maurice D. Hurt both of New York, N.Y; one sister, Ami Nakkoa of Thailand; grandmother, Lelia Hurt of Selma; eight brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law;

and nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Turner was educated in the Selma City School System. She was attending Wallace Community College and was scheduled to graduate in 2004. She was a past member of Union Grove Baptist Church and was currently attending Morning Star Baptist Church. She married her husband Robert on Jan. 6, 2000.

Clarence Robert DuBose Sr.

Deacon Clarence Robert DuBose Sr., 88, of Seattle, Wash., formerly of Selma, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at a hospital in Seattle, Wash.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at Shiloh Baptist Church, Selma, with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his devoted children, daughters, Annice (Eddie) Jordan, Christine Thomas and Jacqueline DuBose Wright all of Seattle, Wash., and Myrtle Moore of Detroit, Mich.; sons, Acie (Candace) DuBose of Seattle, Wash., Edgar (Linda) DuBose of Renton, Wash., Eugene (Peggy) Johnson of Cincinnati, Ohio, Clarence B. (Geraldine) DuBose of North Plainfield, N.J., Charles (Patricia) DuBose of Brooklyn, NY; a wonderful and loving sister, Louise Glover Colby of Selma; a very special nephew, Fred Glover Jr. of Selma; 34 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and a host of cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lottie Hampton, his father, Smith DuBose, his wife Ethel DuBose, his friend Jennie Hall, his sons, Claude DuBose, Nathaniel Jackson and Clarence DuBose Jr., his daughter, Bettie DuBose-Randle, and his grandsons, Demetrius DuBose and Bruce DuBose.

Dea. DuBose, was affectionately known as &uot;Daddy&uot;, &uot;The Old Man&uot;, &uot;Buddy&uot;, &uot;Grand Daddy&uot;, &uot;Grand Pop&uot;, &uot;Uncle Clarence&uot; and &uot;Bose Eye&uot;.

Deacon DuBose was born October 6, 1915 in Selma, to the late Lottie Hampton and Smith DuBose. He was baptized at an early age and later was ordained as a deacon at the Sandridge Baptist Church in Selma.

He was employed by the R. L. Zeigler’s Packing Company in Selma, where he worked as a butcher and retired after over 30 years.

In 1995, Deacon Clarence DuBose relocated to Seattle, Washington due to his illness. He attended the People’s Institutional Baptist Church with his daughters until his hearing and health began to fail.

Dea DuBose, was an avid fisherman, gardener and hunter. Dea. DuBose loved fishing at the catfish farms, and the river in the Selma Area. In Seattle, he enjoyed fishing in Lake Washington. He loved to get up early in the morning and sit for hours on end on the bank of the lake. When he wasn’t fishing in Selma, he loved to go hunting with his nephew, Fred Jr. While in Seattle, his pride and joy was his garden where he grew some of the biggest heads of cabbage and the biggest collard greens ever seen. He enjoyed watching the vegetables grow and shared them with family and friends.

Deacon Clarence DuBose was a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather, He was a caring brother, uncle, cousin and concerned friend.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He leaves a legacy of family who will dearly miss him.

Clarence Robert DuBose Jr.

Clarence Robert DuBose Jr., 62, of Brooklyn, N. Y., formerly of Selma, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at a hospital in Windsor, Conn.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at Shiloh Baptist Church, Selma, with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his five children, Pamela (Ralph) Waller of Windsor, Conn., Victor Woods of Dorchester, Mass., Stephen (Robin) DuBose of South Ozone, N.Y., Jason DuBose of Miami, Fla., and Rodney Woods of Dorchester, Mass.; four sisters, Annice (Eddie) Jordan, Christine Thomas and Jacqueline DuBose-Wright all of Seattle, Wash., and Myrtle Moore of Detroit, Mich.; five brothers, Acie (Candace) DuBose of Seattle, Wash., Edgar (Linda) DuBose of Renton, Wash., Eugene (Peggy) Johnson of Cincinnati, Ohio, Clarence B. (Geraldine) DuBose of North Plainfield, N.J., and Charles (Patricia) DuBose of Brooklyn, NY; four grandchildren, Kareem. Brittany, Kiara and Jason Jr.; an aunt, Louise Glover-Colby; and a host of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ethel DuBose, his father, Clarence DuBose Sr., his sister, Bettie DuBose-Randle, his brothers, Claude DuBose and Nathaniel Jackson.

Mr. DuBose was born on Oct. 24, 1941 to the late Clarence R. DuBose Sr. and the late Ethel L. DuBose in Selma. He served in the U.S. Army from 1964-1970 and was honorably discharged.

Michael James Johnson

Michael James Johnson, 55, of Statesville, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at Ivy Creek Methodist Church with the Rev. Rick Patterson officiating.

Survivors include three sons and one daughter-in-law, Michael and Coko Johnson of Atlanta Ga., Jason Johnson of Statesville, and Jacob Johnson of Auburn; long-time companion, Cindy White of Perry County and her family; one sister, Judy Johnson of Seattle, Wash.; one brother, William Johnson of Boca Raton, Fla.; and a host of friends, including Jane and Jane Burdette and David Summerville.

Mr. Johnson was a graduate of Briarcliff High Cliff in Atlanta, Ga., Class of 1967. He was also a graduate of the University of Alabama in Birmingham, earning a degree as an EMT Paramedic and the recipient of the President’s List award. He served in the United States Marine Corps and served as a Firemedic with the Montgomery Fire Department. At the time of his death he was the owner and operator of the family farm in Statesville.

Judy Carol Luckie

Judy Carol Luckie, 61, of Lowndesboro, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, at a Birmingham hospital.

Services are at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at Lowndesboro Baptist Church with the Rev. James Greene officiating.

Burial will follow in Oakview Cemetery with Leak-Memory Chapel directing.

Survivors include her daughters, Tammy Meadows (Kirk), Teresa Ellison (Jack); mother, Cumi Luckie; brother, Lannis Luckie; sisters, Peggy McClellan, Rebecca Myrick; and grandson, Jackson Ellison.

She was preceded in death by hr father, James Leroy Luckie, sister, Betty Thornell and a brother, Robert Luckie.

Active pallbearers are nephews.

Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service.

Ms. Luckie was a loving mother and grandmother, an avid fisherwoman, beloved church member, gardener, choir member and good friend to all that knew her.
