The problem: to reduce the risk of becoming HIV infected. The solution: education.

The American Red Cross Black Belt Chapter in Selma will be holding an HIV Education and Prevention Instructor course from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 19-22 at their office on 812 Selma Ave.

The course will be taught by American Red Cross Volunteer Educator Carrie DeYampert Grider and Cedric Wherry, who is an American Red Cross National Faculty Instructor.

DeYampert said the purpose of the course is to communicate information and teach skills to enable African-American young people and adults to reduce their risk of becoming HIV-infected.

DeYampert said that 13 people had signed up for the course, but that new students were welcome.

DeYampert said that the cost of the course is $150, which covers all classes, materials and registration.

She said that each instructor candidate who completes the training successfully will receive two Red Cross Instructor Certificates: one as an African-American HIV/AIDS instructor and one as a Basic HIV/AIDS Prevention Skills instructor.
