Sadie Bell

Sadie Bell, 88, of Selma, died Thursday, November 6, 2003, at a local nursing home.

Graveside services are at 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 11, at Pleasant Hill AME Church Cemetery in Magnolia, with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Mattie Anderson

Mattie Anderson, 84, of Dallas County, died Friday, November 7, 2003, at her home.

Services are at 12 noon, Saturday, November 15, at Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Rev. F.D. Reese officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include one son, Elijah Anderson of Detroit, Mich.; three daughters, Josie Watson of Selma, Callie Wright and Jessie (Leon) Vickers all of Detroit, Mich.; two brothers, Henry (Willa) Boggs of Tacoma, Wash., and Samuel Boggs of Bakersfield, Calif.; one sister, Dorothy Lynn of Jackson, Miss.; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one son-in-law; one brother-in-law; one sister-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives.

Active pallbearers are deacons and grandsons.

Ms. Anderson was a former choir member and a member of the Ebenezer Missionary Society.

Erick D. Huntington

Erick D. Huntington, 20, of Dallas County, died Friday, November 7, 2003, at a

local hospital.

Services are at 12:30 p.m. Friday, November 14, at Christian Grace Apostolic Church, located 2929 Citizens Parkway, with Elder James Marshall officiating and Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his parents, Luther and Addie Huntington; two brothers, Aaron and Joseph Huntington; one sister, Amber Huntington; one sister-in-law; and two nephews.

Charlie Woods

Charlie Woods, 78, of Selma, died Saturday, November 8, 2003, at a local nursing home.

Services are at 1 p.m. Thursday, November 13, at the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. Spicer officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include one son, Charlie Woods Jr.; two sisters, Gertrude Young of Selma and Mattie Martinear.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, and two sisters.

Active pallbearers are nephews and friends.

Sue Reiney Hooper

Sue Reiney Hooper, 84, of Selma, died Monday, November 10, 2003, following a brief illness.

Services were held on Wednesday, November 12, 2003, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Ron Stone officiating. Burial will follow in Old Live Oak Cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

She is survived by her children, Harry L. Hooper, III (Nancy) of Tallahassee, FL.; Sue Hooper Mason (Michael) Andersonville, TN. and Kent Hooper Woodruff (Perry) of Selma.

She is also survived by her granddaughters, Cammie Johnston (Garrett) of Woodstock, Ga.; Caroline Woodruff and Anne Woodruff of Selma and her great-grandsons, Garrett Johnston and Kent Johnston of Woodstock, GA.

Mrs. Hooper is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pallbearers were Charles S. Frazer, Jr., Philip Johnson, Richard P. Morthland, John G. Chisolm, M. Alston Keith and J. Parke Keith.

Mrs. Hooper was born in Albany, Ga. and was reared in Columbus, GA. She was a graduate of Huntingdon College in Montgomery. While attending college, she was first introduced to Harry L. Hooper, Jr. by Minnie Johnson Singleton. The couple became re-acquainted during World War II and married in Columbus, GA.

The couple settled in Selma in 1945, where Mr. Hooper owned and operated Hooper Motor Company.

Mrs. Hooper was active in the community as a member of the Selma Charity League, Pandora and the Trellis Garden Club. She was also an active member of the First Presbyterian Church serving as president of the Women of the Church, teaching adult Sunday School classes and singing in the choir.

She was also an avid bridge player, she smocked with the St. Paul’s sewing group and was a gardener with a special affinity for African violets. She also loved hand-painting wedding invitations as special gifts.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry L. Hooper, Jr.

Memorials made be made to First Presbyterian Church, the Selma-Dallas County Public Library, Camp Grist or a favorite charity.

Bernice Sanders

Bernice Sanders, 55, of Dallas County, died Wednesday, November 5, 2003.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 15, at St. Chapter P.B. Church, Browns, with the Rev. Claude Cole officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery with White Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include four loving sisters, Hester 0. Sanders of Browns, Hattie (George) of Marion, Georgia Robinson of Birmingham, and Racheal Green of Bessemer; three brothers: James (Annie Pearl) of Selma, Frank Oden and Eddie Tabb of Bessemer; five sister-in-laws, Luvenia Thomas, Corine Myers, Ruby L. Sanders, and Barbara Sanders Hymes all of Uniontown and Lula Brown of Greensboro; six brother-in-laws, Charlie Pasley of Browns, Jimmie (Willie Mae) Sanders, Robert (Sharon) Sanders, Patrick Sanders, Andy (Bessie) Sanders, Roosevelt (Jennie) Sanders and Samuel Thomas; 82 nieces and nephews; 65 great nieces and nephews; A very special godson, Lee Mitchell III. Loving and devoted friends, Mary Kimbrough, Arcola Moore, Emma Bradley, and Rosa Pasley.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Hattie Coleman, father, Henry Oden, and a sister, Josie Oden Reese.

Active pallbearers are nephews.

Flowerbearers are nieces.

Repast will follow burial at Boguechitto Community Center.

Mrs. Sanders was born in Dallas County to the late Hattie and Henry Oden. She confessed Christ at an early age and joined the Concord P.B. Church.

Later she moved to Marion Jct. and joined the Caldweld Church under Rev. H. L. Whitt. Then later moved to Uniontown and joined the Living Hope M.B. Church under Rev. James R. Murdock.

She married Tommie Sanders who preceded her in death. Then she moved back to Marion Jct. and joined the St. Chapter P.B. Church under Rev. Cole and she served faithfully until her health failed.
