In celebration of National Hospice Month, Wiregrass Hospice is hosting a health fair that will take place Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church on Broad Street.

The program will include free medical advice provided by Dr. Ron Hartsfield, a specialist in internal medicine and an appearance by Mayor Janes Perkins, Jr. at noon to sign a proclamation recognizing November as National Hospice Month.

Beth Williamson, community educator for Wiregrass Hospice, said that this is a good chance for people to come out and get medical advice who normally would not.

There will also be free blood pressure, glucose and hemoglobin checks, literature and advice on vision and Medicare/Medicaid, diabetes education, safety and fire prevention tips and more.

The fair will also get the word out about the type of care hospices provide to people, Williamson said. Many people simply are not aware of the benefits of hospice care, she added.

This care includes physical, spiritual and emotional care of those who do not have long to live and their caretakers and survivors.

WSFA-12 out of Montgomery also has plans to broadcast the weather live from the health fair at noon.

In addition to the fair, the hospice is also having a campaign where they are placing signs around Selma letting people know about National Hospice Month.
