It’s finally feeling like fall outside, and for people who want to get out and enjoy the crisp, cool days, Kenan’s Mill would be a good place to visit Saturday.

Nancy Mosley, who is working with the celebration, said that while some money has been raised for the restoration, this is to further add to what they need.

This will be the third time the mill has ground corn since it re-opened. Mosley said she hopes that the festival will educate people about the mill and what they have been doing to restore it.

So far, the mill has been part of Pilgramage and Cahawba Day Festival.

At the mill Saturday, there will be cotton combing, corn shelling and husking, a blacksmith, and bluegrass music among other activities. A large part of the fund-raiser will be selling quarts of Brunswick stew, Mosley said.

New to the actvities at the mill is a cornmeal cookoff. If people are known for baking good cornbread, corn tortillias, hushpuppies, fried fish or other cornmeal specialties, they are urged to enter.

Mosley said the deadline for entrants is today. She can be contacted at 872-5346.

So far, she added, there have not been any entries of good old cornbread that was grandma’s favorite. But there have been other types of entiries.

Among the other entries missing are those for hush puppies.

There are three categories: baked, fried and dessert. Those who want to enter something in the fried category can do so at the mill &045;&045; everything else must be cooked in advance.

Each entry must contain cornmeal.

The celebration will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kenan’s Mill. Admission is $3 for adults 12 and older, $1 for children between 5 and 12 and free for children under 5.
