At 10 a.m. today, a new era will begin for Roger Butler Jewelers with the ribbon-cutting of Butler-Truax Jewelers.

The ribbon-cutting is the culmination of months of work by Butler, his wife Dolly, their daughter Doris Truax, son-in-law Jim Truax and dozens of employees and friends who pitched.

This is the fourth move in the firm’s 157-year history.

Roger Butler Jewelers started out under the ownership of G.L. and J.R. Poor in 1845. The brothers sold the business to S.F. Hobbs in 1859. It passed down through the family until I.J. Hix bought it in 1932. After his death, Butler acquired it in 1964.

Butler-Truax will be housed in the old Kress building, built in 1931. An architectural art-deco wonder, it is one of the few buildings from the S.H. Kress & Co. stores that is saved and put to use.

The store will also have a connecting door to Truax & Co. next door, owned and operated by Doris Truax. She sells antique silver, porcleain, furniture and others goods, which will complement the jewelry store.
