Roosevelt Sturdivant

Roosevelt &uot;Johnny&uot; Sturdivant, 69, died Saturday, September 13, 2003, at healthcare facility in Boston, Mass.

Services are at1 p.m. Saturday, September 20, at Shiloh Baptist Church, Potter Station, with the Rev. D.M.

Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Craig Hill Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Roberta Sturdivant; four children, Janice (Nate) Sharpe, Ernest Sturdivant, Edward Sturdivant and Tony Sturdivant of Selma; siblings, Corine Hasberry of Boston, Mass, George Sturdivant of Mobile, Otis Sturdivant of Syracuse, N.Y., Jimmy Sturdivant and Cisre Sturdivant of Selma; three grandchildren, Shmeka Sturdivant, Laquita Sharpe and Edward Griffin; one great-grandchild, Ashunta Cleveland and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mammie Sturdivant of Selma, and a sister, Lelia Mae Harris.

Mr. Sturdivant was the oldest of his sibling born to Mr. and Mrs. Sturdivant

Brenda Morgan Bradford

Brenda Morgan Bradford, 53, of Sunny South, died Monday, September 15, 2003, at a Thomasville healthcare facility.

Services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September, 17, at Sunny South Baptist Church with the Rev. Micah Gandy and the Rev. Don Newton officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include her husband, Mack Bradford of Sunny South; daughter, Paige Hicks of Pine Hill; son, Theron Bradford of Sunny South; brother, Beatty Morgan of Thomasville; granddaughter, Dare Hicks of Pine Hill; grandsons, Joseph Hicks of Pine Hill, Taylor Bradford and Tanner Bradford both of Sunny South.

Active pallbearers are Tommy Wright, Barry Parker, Ronnie Moore, Jim Spinks, Tommy Joe Sims and Ken Agee.

Honorary pallbearers are Bill Gowan, Terry Short, Keith Franz, Willard Manus, Jimmy Ray Jordan, Ernest Boyd, Jamie Jordan, Bobbie Parker, Pine Hill High School Class of 1968.

Richard Callens

Richard Callens, 91, of Thomasville, died Friday, September 12, 2003, at his home.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 20, at New Hope No.1 Baptist Church in Thomasville.

Mr. Callens was born in Dallas County, and lived here when he was a young man. He is the brother of Catherine Johnson.

Kate Smiley

Kate Smiley, 86, of Selma, died Tuesday, September 16, 2003, in Selma.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Walker Mortuary.

Charles L. Hunter Sr.

Charles L. &uot;C.L&uot; Hunter Sr., 76, of Selma, died Wednesday, September 10, 2003, at his home.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 20, at the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. Gregory Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Athens Baptist Church Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include sons, Joe M. Ellis, Rufus Hunter, Charles Lewis Hunter Jr., and Lorenzo Hunter; two daughters, Nellie Spears and Anna Hunter; two brothers, Johnny Hunter and Willie Hunter; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one son-in-law; four daughters-in-law; one sister-in-law; 12 nieces; 10 nephews.

Active pallbearers are nephews and friends.

Robert L. Marshall

Robert L. Marshall, 75, of Selma, died Tuesday, September 16, 2003, at his home.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 20, at the Chapel of Lewis Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. John Mobley officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Mobley (John) of Coatesville, Pa., and Glenda Haygood of Glrn Burnie, Md.; three sons, Earnest Marshall (Brenda), Timothy Marshall of Selma and Robert Marshall Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; one devoted sister, Billie Jean Marshall; one brother, Benjamin Marshall (Effie Lee) of Oakland, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and two special friends.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Monica and Cynthia Lucille Marshall, one son, James Henry Marshall.

Mr. Marshall was born on Nov. 26, 1927, in Dallas County to the late Isom and Martha Marshall.

He was a well-known brick mason throughout the Dallas County area. He confessed Christ and was baptized at an early age and served as deacon at Little Rock Baptist Church in Selma.

Infant Jayla Lee

Infant Jayla Lee, of Selma, died Tuesday, September 20, 2003, at a local hospital.

Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 20, at Old Pine Grove Church Cemetery, Autaugaville, with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include mother, Yolanda Lee.

Roosevelt Merchant

Roosevelt Merchant, 65, of Orrville, died Sunday, September 14, 2003, at his home.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 20, at Aimwell Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Merchant; parents, Mattie Merchant and Sam Smith; two sons, King (Florene) Tolbert and Roosevelt Merchant Jr.; two daughters, Candice Robinson and Shaunta Merchant; two brothers, Johnnie (Maggie) Merchant and Shephard Merchant; nine grandchildren; two brothers-in-law; one daughters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law and a host of nieces and nephews; special niece, Tiffany Tolbert.

Active pallbearers are family and friends.

Mitzi Rosiland Haney Dunn

Mitzi Rosiland Haney Dunn, 55, of Selma, died Wednesday, September 17, 2003, at a local hospital.

Survivors include, her husband, Jerry Dunn of Selma; son, Jared Dunn of Selma; brother, Tommy Haney of Greenville, Tenn.; sisters, Jane Moore of Greeneville, Tenn., and Priscilla Westmoreland of Greeneville, Tenn.

Visitations were held from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, at Lawrence Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Tennessee.

Kate Jackson

Kate Jackson, 85, of Tishabee Community, Boligee, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at a Demopolis hospital.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Christian Valley Baptist Church, Boligee, with the Rev. William Branch officiating. Burial will follow in Taylor Place Cemetery with Larkin and Scott Funeral Home directing.

Virginia Payne

Virginia Payne, 81, of Demopolis, died Tuesday, September 16, 2003, at a Demopolis nursing home.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 20, at Morning Star Baptist Church, Demopolis, with the Rev. E. C. Clemons officiating. Burial will follow in Limestone Cemetery, Gallion, with Larkin and Scott Funeral Home directing.

The body will lie in state at the church on Saturday, beginning at 12 noon.

James D. Essex

James E. Essex, 43, of Demopolis, died Thursday, September 18, 2003, at a Tuscaloosa hospital.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Larkin and Scott Funeral Home.
