Consignment shop joins businesses on Broad Street

And yet another empty building on Broad Street has been filled.

Mary Lumpkin has moved into the building with her budding consignment shop, Changing Hands, and the doors are officially opening today.

But, customers were coming in even before that. A woman who works at nearby El Ranchero browsed through the store on Tuesday while Lumpkin was waiting for the checkout counter to come in from her old building. She has vowed to be back today.

It is this type of loyal customer base and the prospect of more that prompted Lumpkin to seek the building on Broad that used to be home to Island Sun Tanning.

The shop had been located on Dawson Avenue. After a year of being in business, Lumpkin came to a crossroads.

She had to decide to expand or cut back on her inventory. She chose to expand.

The store next to Truax & Co. is much larger. There is a front area designated for clothing with an enclosed office for Lumpkin. The back room will contain non-clothing items as well as discounted ones.

Prior to being a consignment shop owner, Lumpkin worked in fabrics for over 15 years. Then, she worked at Suzette’s Dress Shop for 17 years until her husband fell ill with cancer. After he passed away, she worked in a doctor’s office for awhile.

So, Changing Hands was born. The shop sells clothing from places like New York and Los Angeles, as well as items that are on consignment by local citizens.

Lumpkin joins good company. Two doors down, Roger Butler’s Jewlers is preparing to move into the Kress Building and change its name to Butler-Truax Jewelers.

Lumpkin said she’s hoping that opening on Broad Street will be good for business. She sat in the window of the building and looked out over the room where neatly-arranged clothing racks had just been set up.
