The memorials are over, loved ones have been recalled, the efforts to rebuild have continued and still, for many Americans, September 12 has not come.

This is the day that symbolizes a new era of hope and restoration. This is a day that came promptly for Dallas County as United Way kicked off its annual campaign.

On 9/11 we looked back to remember a tragedy that changed the face of our nation. On 9/12 we were able to look forward to a future of prosperity that comes with a community supporting organizations that help those in need.

United Way serves as an umbrella to many of those organizations on which we rely for education, emergency assistance, youth activities, recreation and, for some, the only hot meal they will get each day. Contributions to United Way go further than one, touching the lives of many.

Over the course of the next few months, your work place representatives will be encouraging you to give, give, give! Know that the money you contribute has more meaning that its dollar value. It means you care about your fellow man and the nation in which we live. It means you want to help advance our community through cornerstone organizations. Most of all, it means you are willing to put your money to work for hope. Something we can all use a dose of in the wake of these trying times.

This year’s goal is $500,000 of which 17% already has been raised. Since early this year, work towards that goal has been under way. Those efforts should be applauded.

As well, accolades should go to the many volunteers who help make this campaign successful. These people not only give their contributions, but also their time to help motivate others. Without their overriding enthusiasm, United Way would not be possible.

We encourage you to give to United Way, to look around and take pride in all you see &045;&045; the balloons that celebrated the campaign’s kick-off, the red thermometer line rising towards the annual goal, the smiling faces of the the lives you’ve touched and even the check that ensures a brighter future for all.

Moreover, take pride in the fact that you will help to bring a new September 12 for years to come.
