No immediate changes are anticipated for local workers following the announcement Wednesday that Birmingham-based Meadowcraft Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection.
Owners of the Birmingham-based furniture maker discussed the bankruptcy filing Tuesday with employees at the firm’s Craig Field Industrial Park plant. The plant employs more than 200 workers at its Craig Field location.
A spokesperson for the company said the Chapter 11 filing is designed to allow the company to restructure its debts. The company is expected to continue to stay open during the Chapter 11 proceedings.
Press reports stated that Meadowcraft’s financial difficulties stem in large part from the bankruptcies of two of its largest customers, Kmart and Service Merchandise. The company’s sales fell $20 million during the fiscal year that ended July 31.
The company manufactures wrought iron patio and lawn furniture as well as casual indoor furniture. The Craig Field location manufactures primarily umbrellas and cushions. The company has locations in Birmingham, Wadley and Selma.
Production at the Selma plant is not expected to be affected during the restructuring process.
