Agee Phillips Sr.

Agee Phillips Sr., 81, of Selma, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at a local hospital.

Services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002 at Grant Chapel AME with Rev. Marion Brock Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Memory Garden with J.H. Williams & Sons directing.

Survivors include sons Agee Phillips Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio, Robert Phillips of Atlanta; and Morris Phillips of Selma; daughters Bessie Phillips of Selma, Johnnie Garner of Selma,

Debra Phillips of Selma, Josephine (Willie) Green of Birmingham and Edna Towns of Birmingham; brothers Lincoln (Bernice) Phillips of Scotch Plains, N.J., Jesse (Louise) Phillips of Pensacola, Fla., and Willie (Cora) Phillips of Detroit; sisters Gertrude Givner of Selma and Eloise Ward of Sacremento, Calif., 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by a wife, Johnnie Mae Phillips, parents Link and Emma Phillips, and a son, Jessie L. Phillips. He was a lifelong member of Grant Chapel AME and a veteran of World War II.

Active pallbearers include grandsons and nephews.

William Coolidge “Bill” Cobb

William Coolidge “Bill” Cobb, 78, of Selma, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, at a local hospital.

Graveside services will be held Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at 10 a.m. in New Live Oak Cemetery with Rev. Robert Hugh Taylor officiating and Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie Nichols Cobb; daughter Shirley Cobb (Wiley) Ingram of Selma; daughter-in-law Gloria Dale Cobb of Tyler; grandchildren Tyrone Wayne (Kathi) Cobb of Troy, Larry Wayne (Kristie) Ingram of Panama City, Fla., and Stanley Alex Ingram of Selma; great-grandchildren William Chase Cobb of Troy, and Meighan Denise Cobb of Troy; brother James White Cobb of Creola; sisters Rosie Alabama Felts of Selma, and Josephine Pitts of Selma.

Active pallbearers include Tyrone Wayne Cobb, Larry Wayne Ingram, Stanley Alex Ingram, Jimmy Raynowska, George Denmark and Timmy Rylee.

Honorary pallbearers include W.J. Ballard, Harold Plummer, Ray Denmark and friends and coffee drinkers at Wal-Mart.

Mr. Cobb retired from Dallas County Engineering after more than 30 years of service. He was instrumental in the building of many of Dallas County’s roads and bridges, and he was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Cobb is preceded in death by his son, Robert Wayne Cobb of Tyler.

The family will receive friends at Lawrence Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002.

William Richard “Dick” Jones

William Richard “Dick” Jones, 64, of Selma, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at a local hospital.

Services will be held Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at 4 p.m. at Northside Baptist Church with Rev. Kenny Hatcher officiating. Burial will follow in New Live Oak Cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara V. Jones of Selma; son Richard Jones of Demopolis; granddaughter Mary Catherine Jones of Demopolis; sister Lee Anne Henderson of Orrville; brothers Carter (Gayle) Jones of Centennial, Colo., and Jimmy (Chela) Jones of Alta Loma, Calif.

Active pallbearers include David Andrews, Mickey Miller, Dee Roy Montz, Mike Driggers, Robert Woods and Reggie Jones.

Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Lee Jones and Anne Elizabeth Jones.

The family will receive friends at Northside Baptist Church from 3-4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to The American Cancer Society.

Charles Beckett Steele

Charles Beckett Steele, 81, of Montgomery, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at his home.

Services will be held at White Chapel in Montgomery at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002. Burial will follow at New Live Oak Cemetery in Selma.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, the former Frances Brown McDowell; a daughter, Sue Steele of Atlanta; two step-children, Rex McDowell (Ellen Sellers) of Dallas, and Carla McDowell of Anchorage, Alaska; grandchildren Emily, Ginny, Mary Susan and Kate McDowell of Dallas, and Jessica McDowell of Anchorage, Alaska; sisters Virginia Steele of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Mary Steele Morgan of Amesville, Ohio; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Charlie “Sweet Pea” McNealey

Charlie “Sweet Pea” McNealey, 51, of Demopolis, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at a Birmingham hospital.

Services will be held Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at Eastern Star Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with Rev. Carlton Hogue officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Cemetery with Larkin & Scott Funeral Directors directing.
