Quenice Ovetta Tolbert

Quenice Ovetta Tolbert, 41, of Selma, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002 at a Birmingham hospital.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at Second Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include her beloved companion, Terry Johnson; mother, Elizabeth C. Tolbert; father, James C. Purdie; one godson, Terrell Mario White; one goddaughter, Valencia White; eight brothers, Marvin Tolbert, Clinton Martin, Raymond Purdie, Terrence Purdie, Timothy Purdie, James Dale Purdie all of Selma, David Walker of Birmingham and Christopher Purdie of Cleveland, Ohio; two sisters, Jacqueline Tolbert Johnson (Dr. Samuel L. Johnson) of Mobile and Verna Purdie Featherston of Cleveland, Ohio; one brother-in-law; three sisters-in-law; seven nephews; 11 nieces; and a host of uncles, aunts and cousins.

Active pallbearers are brothers, Marvin, Clinton, David Raymond, Christopher, Terrence, Timothy, James Dale; also Lee Arthur Johnson, Sylvester Tolbert and Elijah Williams.

Clara C. Walker

Clara C. Walker, 90, of Beloit, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, in Los Angeles, Calf.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, at Mt. Calvary AME Church with the Rev. Amos Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery, Beloit, with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include five sons, Oscar Walker, Robert L. Walker Jr., James N. Walker, Alorenzo Walker and Lesley Walker; three daughters, Dorothy Morris, Annie O. Christian and Clarice Walker; one step-daughter, Dorothy M. Motley; two sisters, Ruby Bates and Mattie Edwards of Birmingham; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three sons-in-law; five daughters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; nine nephews; 15 nieces; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, James N. Robinson, Wash Robinson and Howard Boglin.

Active pallbearers are sons.

Mrs. Walker, dedicated her life to helping people. She was particularly interested in the plight of the black farmer and obtaining the right to vote for her people. She worked closely with Perry County leader Albert Turner and others to form the Southwest Alabama Farmers Association (SWAFA) that was located on Highway 80 West in 1967.

She traveled to Washington to testify on the plight of African American farmers in the 60s. She also served on the Board of Directors of the West Alabama Farmer’s Cooperative.

She worked long and hard trying to register people to vote in her community. She marched in Selma and the surrounding counties with leaders to include Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Many leaders met at her house to discuss strategies and get nourishment from her table. Her doors were always open and the stove always ready. Many still remember her cooking. Her deeds and actions will be remembered for generations to come.

Exie Calhoun

Exie Calhoun, 72, of Selma, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002 at her home.

Services are at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at New Shiloh Baptist Church, Sardis, with the Rev. Coley Chestnut officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include a daughter, Marcella Calhoun Lewis of Highland Falls, N.Y.; three sisters, Beatrice Monk Johnson of Haynesville, La., Lydia Esther Monk Johnson of Las Vegas, Nev., and Parthenia Monk Hawkins of Kansas City, Mo.; nine grandchildren; seven sisters-in-law; and a host of nephews, nieces and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Calhoun.

Active pallbearers are Club members, Kirk Carrington, James Ford, John Green, Bruce Hill, Richard Lee, Jessie Manuel, Willie Moore and Chapman Smith.

Morton H. Peterson Sr.

Morton H. “Pete” Peterson Sr., 85, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002.

Graveside services are at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, at Pineview Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Garland Hunter Jr.

Garland Hunter Jr., 55, of New York, formerly of Dallas County, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002 in New York.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at New Bride Baptist Church with the Rev. Curtis Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Claudia Hunter; one son, Christopher Hunter; one daughter, Audrey Hunter; two brothers, Sammie (Juliet) Hunter of Chambler, Ga., and Melvin (Jacqueline) Hunter of Birmingham; and one sister, Carlean Smiley of Birmingham.

Loraine Tolver

Loraine Tolver, 58, of Selma, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002 at a local hospital.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, at Little Elam Baptist Church with the Rev. Thornton L. Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include her husband, J. C. Tolver Sr.; two sons, J. C. Tolver Jr. and Alonzo Tolver; two daughters, Linda Freeman and Mary Ann Tolver; three brothers, Willie Motley, C. S. Taylor and Edward Taylor; one sister, Mae Mandy Palmer; five grandchildren; one son-in-law; one daughter-in-law; seven brothers-in-law; 11 sisters-in-law; 17 nephews; 12 nieces; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Tolver was preceded in death by her parents, Archie Taylor and Everlene Taylor.
