Family driven out by snakes gets new home

Mary Torrey found a new home Thursday.
Now all she needs is a little help to get it moved.
Torrey was forced from her old home after it was invaded by rattlesnakes. The Department of Human Resources intervened and briefly took custody of Torrey’s five children because of the hazdardous conditions in their old home.
In order to stop DHR from taking her children again, Torrey and her family have been residing at a motel at the expense of Silverstar Arcade for the last two weeks in compliance with guidelines outlined by DHR.
On Monday, the old, snake infested mobile home was torn down. By Tuesday, it was burned to ashes. Now, the lot where the mobile home once stood is empty but ready to be occupied again.
If the first two-bedroom mobile home donated to Torrey by Silverstar the day after DHR took her five children would have been suitable to DHR’s standards, she and her family might be settled by now, Torrey said. But since it did not, plans changed and the waiting process extended.
Michael Jackson, Torrey’s lawyer, said, &uot;I’m glad those slithering rascals are gone and the family can enjoy their new home.&uot;
From the time when the incident went before Judge Nathaniel Walker in his chambers a little more than a week ago, Torrey has reveived numerous gifts and donations of all sorts: three beds, a microwave, a dinning room set, clothes, toys, sheets, curtains and the bare necessities needed to survive.
A Mary Torrey trust fund has been set up at Southtrust bank and patrons are able to make donations at locations in Selma and Montgomery.
Torrey said that DHR has been consistent, if less than helpful, about checking up on her and her children. &uot;Every time they come out they never try to help out in any way. They just check to see what’s going on,&uot; she said.
Torrey said she and her children’s father are planning to get married at the courthouse.
She also said that she is considering filing a lawsuit against DHR for the way it handled the situation.
