After a brief scuffle, a minor injury and an attempted escape, Selma Police, along with Dallas County Sheriff’s Department, arrested a suspect on Saturday after he robbed a jewelry store on Selma Avenue.
Capt. Joe Harrell, chief of detectives at the Selma Police Department, said that the suspect, Michael Jerome Sturdivant, 31, of Selma, attempted to rob Vickers The Jeweler located at 1108 Selma Avenue at approximately 11 a.m. Saturday morning.
According to police reports, after jumping the counter, Sturdivant hit the owner of the business in the face and then stole an undisclosed amount of jewelry.
He then left the business and was later spotted by a member of the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department driving a stolen vehicle near Choctaw Avenue.
After being stopped by Capt. Dan Olinger, of the sheriff’s department, Sturdivant then exited the vehicle and tried to enter another vehicle.
A scuffle then ensued between Sturdivant, Olinger as well as two other residents who were near the area at the time, Harrell said.
Sturdivant then entered Olinger’s car, attempting to escape, said Harrell. He ran over Olinger’s foot, causing a minor injury; however, Olinger, with the help of the other residents, managed to apprehend the suspect, pulling him out of the vehicle.
Sturdivant was charged with one count of robbery in the third degree, two counts of theft of property in the first degree, one count of attempted theft of property in the first degree, assault second degree and reckless endangerment.
Harrell said Sturdivant was sent to the Dallas County Jail without bond after previously being released on bond in another felony case.
