Marie Robertson
Marie Robertson, 88, of Demopolis, died Thursday, July 17, 2003 at a Northport hospital.
Services are at 11 a.m. Friday, July 25, at Morning Star Baptist Church, Demopolis, with the Rev. James Dunn officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Gardens in Demopolis, with Larkin and Scott Funeral Home of Demopolis directing.
The body will lie in state at the church beginning at 10 a.m.
Rachel Lewis
Rachel Lewis, of Silver Springs, Md., formerly of Selma, died Thursday, July 24, 2003 in a Silver Springs nursing home.
Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27 in Washington, DC., where she lived since 1935.
Survivors include two daughters, Ida and Sarah Lewis of Washington, D.C.; one grandson, Atty. Semeone Williams of Prince Georges County, Md.; several nieces and nephews. Selma survivors include nieces, Ruth Dubose and Naomi R. Randolph; cousins, Julie Rand; niece in Silver Springs, Marie Rayford; niece, Odessa Bates of Detroit, Mich.; and a host of other great and great-nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her parents, Annie Oliver and Lawson Rogers, and her brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Lewis was the youngest sister of the late Rev. U.B. Rogers I. She was a graduate of Selma University. She was a Baptist and active in her church and civic organizations until her confinement in Silver Springs nursing home
Dr. Morris Barton
Dr. Morris &uot;Bunky&uot; Barton, died Sunday, July 20, 2003, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Memorial services will be held at the Phoenix Country Club from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, July 31.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Beata Barton; his sons, Douglas Bruce Barton and Stuart Beauregard Barton; step-sons Kelly and Troy Mero; daughter-in-law Cindy Mero; granddaughters Quin and Carson Mero; and brother Dr. David Barton. In lieu of flowers donations to the University of Tennessee Medical School and the Selma-Dallas County Public Library.
Dr. Barton was born Nov. 6, 1928 in Selma.
Dr. Barton was a prominent plastic and reconstruction surgeon residing in Phoenix, Ariz., for nearly 40 years. Dr. Barton was a pioneer in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Barton attended Duke University, gradu
ated from the University of Alabama and received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee School of Medicine. He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, honoree medical society. After his internship at Philadelphia General Hospital in Pennsylvania, he had residencies at the Kennedy Veterans Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., Southern Pacific General Hospital in San Francisco and completed residency at Baylor University College of Medicine affiliated hospitals in Houston Texas. Dr. Barton was a captain in the United States Air Force Medical Corp, during the Korean War at Carswell Airforce Base, in Fort Worth, Texas. Bunky was tremendously warm and outgoing. He instantly made everyone comfortable with his friendly demeanor, great personality, sense of humor and strong character. He instantly made people feel at ease, patients and friends alike.
He was a keen athlete and enjoyed snow skiing, tennis, golf and swimming. He was a great lover of history, movies and Al Jolson.
Mary Catherine MeKeil
Mary Catherine McKeill age 83, formerly of Birmingham, died Thursday, July 10, 2003 at healthcare facility in Snellville.
Graveside services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at Live Oak Cemetery in Selma, with McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W. Broad St., Greensboro, Ga., directing.
Survivors include cousins, Don Wilson and wife Donna of McDonough, Ga., Carolyn Crouse and husband John of Greensboro, Ga., Joe Scott Mead of Birmingham, George Mead of Sarasota, Fla., Tracy Leberte and husband Larry of Birmingham;
and an aunt, LaVonia Mead of Birmingham.
Mrs. McKeil, was born on June 19, 1920 in Selma, to the late John William McKeil and Elaine Furness Mead McKeil. She graduated from high school in Birmingham and was active in the USO during WW II. She had worked as a secretary for Marlowe Construction Company, Strauss Construction Company and retired in 1988 from Stringfellow Lumber Company in Birmingham. For the past 30 years she had lived in Homewood, and recently moved to Georgia to be close to her family.
