After one day of play at the Selma Country Club’s 2002 Dixie Junior Invitational, one of Selma’s own leads the pack.
Wes Porter is playing in the 17-18 division of the golf tournament, and he is using his home-course advantage to pull out ahead of the pack, going one over par on Tuesday. However, Porter does see some room for improvement in his short game.
“I think I can do better during the rest of the tournament,” he said. “I didn’t putt well, but I hit the ball really good.”
Doing well at tournaments on a Selma golf course is nothing new to Porter, who led in last year’s state tournament after two days of play, ultimately finishing eighth. He now sees many of the same competitors at events such as the Dixie Junior Invitational.
“I’ve played with almost all of these guys before,” he said. “I’m pretty good friends with them, so it’s fun.”
Porter will tee off at 1:40 today to compete in the second round of play.
