No candidates pledge support

If LaTosha Brown or Yusuf Salaam were hoping to pick up any quick endorsements in the wake of Tuesday’s Democratic primary for state House of Representatives District 67, they’re still sitting by the phone waiting for the call that hasn’t come.

There were nine candidates in the crowded field, but so far none has endorsed either Brown or Salaam in the upcoming June 25th runoff election.

According to unofficial election returns, Brown received 3,399 votes Tuesday to 2,148 for Salaam.

Brown’s endorsement by the Alabama New South Coalition during the primary campaign may have proved to be the decisive factor in giving her 33 percent of the vote compared to 21 percent for Salaam.

But if either she or Salaam were hoping to add to their support by picking up the endorsement of one of their fellow Democrats, that hasn’t happened thus far.

Obviously, the most politically important endorsement would be that of the Rev. Glenn King, who finished third with 1,959 votes – far outdistancing fourth-place finisher Ron Peoples with 696 votes.

“I have spoken with several of the other candidates, and I expect to make an announcement soon,” Brown said.

She declined to say specifically which candidates she had spoken with.

Salaam said he also expects several endorsements to be forthcoming.

“Sure, I’d love to have ’em,” Salaam said. “But I’m enough of a political realist to know that it may not mean much aside from the political symbolism involved.”

Still, as the runoff campaign picks up steam, it would be nice to hear that phone ring.
