Two children were killed Tuesday in a gruesome car accident on the Old Montgomery Highway.
Shortly after 10 a.m., Quintavius Sanders, 4, and Jarvaris Maull, 14, were instantly killed when a car crashed into two gas pumps at Harold’s Grocery in Selmont.
According to Alabama State Trooper spokesman Chris Ellis, a gray Honda Accord driven by Fannie Sanders, 34, swerved off the road and struck the gas pumps at Harold’s.
The reason Sanders’ car swerved is still under investigation. However, Ellis speculated the accident could have been caused by a blown tire on the Accord.
Sheliah Peat, who said she witnessed the accident, had a different story. She said that another car was involved in the accident, and that the car left the scene.
According to Peat, another car was driving in the opposite direction of the Accord and caused Sanders to have to swerve from her path.
Ellis, when asked about Peat’s account, said there was not evidence to confirm her story at this time.
Quintavius Sanders, a passenger in the car driven by his mother, Fannie, died instantly from the accident. Maull also was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to state troopers, Maull was riding his bike near Harold’s Grocery when the Accord swerved off the road. Maull was struck by the car and died.
Maull briefly attended Tipton Middle School and was described as a well-behaved student.
Hattie Shelton, Tipton’s assistant principal, was audibly shaken by the news when asked for a comment.
“He was very good child, very well behaved,” she said.
