Growth not always measured in jobs

Sometimes it’s possible to see community growth and expansion without looking at retail sales and employment percentages.
Growth can come in many ways and one of the most beautiful and powerful ways to grow is through feeding and growing the spirit. On Sunday, that’s what happened in Selma when the Tabernacle of Praise Church moved into its new facility on Woodrow Street.
Led by the energetic Effell Williams, the church has blossomed and moved into a 17,000 square foot facility that can hold 1,200 worshippers in its sanctuary.
The building is modern and a real asset to the community.
Hundreds of people turned out for the opening of the new church, including Mayor Perkins, Councilwoman Nancy Sewell, and City Council President George Evans.
The church’s success shows what can happen when people dream and commit to making their dreams happen. Tabernacle of Praise started as a small Christian ministry in Williams’ living room and has emerged as a community asset.
Williams is a dynamic leader who has helped the church launch a television and radio ministry to reach those beyond the church’s walls.
And while recognizing Tabernacle of Praise’s accomplishments, it is important to remember that religion is the foundation of American values and the spirit of the church helps the community meet its needs.
We thank the Tabernacle of Praise congregation and Effell Williams for what they have done for our community.
