Mary Phillips
Mary Phillips, 82, of Selma, died Thursday, May 15, 2003, at a local hospital.
Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Grant Chapel AME Church. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with J.H. Williams and Sons Funeral Home directing.
Survivors include two sons, Charlie Phillips (Wanda) of Birmingham and Clem J. Phillips of Selma; one daughter, Carrie M. Phillips Robinson (Charles) of Rose Hill, N.C.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
Active pallbearers are family and friends.
Mrs. Phillips was a lifelong member of Grant Chapel AME Church, where she served on the Stewardess and Missionary boards.
The body will lie in state at the church on Saturday, beginning at noon.
Jesse Underwood
Jesse Underwood, 87, of Dallas County, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at a health care facility.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. Thursday, May 29, at Elmwood Cemetery with Elder Jami
Bailey officiating and Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.
Survivors include two sons, John L. Underwood of Compton, Calif., and James Hancock of Virginia City, Va.; a daughter, Willie Mae Lamar of Selma; special friend, Mattie Hicks; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; one daughter-in-law; a host of nieces and nephew; and cousin and, John, Roscoe and Wilbur Underwood of Clanton, and Macon Underwood of Clifwood, N.J.
Bright Norfleet
The Rev. Bright Norfleet Jr., 61, of Uniontown, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at his home.
Services are noon Saturday, May 24, at First Baptist Church of Uniontown, with the Rev. Anthony Trimble officiating. Burial will follow in Norfleet Cemetery of Newbern with Julia White Funeral Home directing.
Family visitation will be at 6 p.m. Friday at St. Mary Baptist Church in Browns.
Mattie Sullivan
Mattie Sullivan, 78, of Uniontown, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at her daughter’s home in Uniontown.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Julia L. White Funeral Home.
Richard Lynn Piper
Richard Lynn Piper, 66, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Selma, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at a hospital in Ocala.
Graveside services will be announced later by Selma Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife, Jackie Piper; parents, Odis and Nell Watters; brothers, Henderson &uot;Tubby&uot; Piper, Raymond &uot;Bubba&uot; Piper and Clarence &uot;Toota&uot; Piper; sister, Shirley Ann Baggett; two sons; two daughters and numerous grandchildren; and a good friend, Buddy Dennis.
