Mary A. Reese
Mary A. Reese, 87, of Marion, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002 at a Marion nursing home.
Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, Mar. 2, at Union Grove P.B. Church with Elder Ocie Acoff officiating. Burial will follow in Lincoln Cemetery with Lewis Brothers Funeral Hone directing.
Survivors include her loving and devoted children, four sons, Elbert (Dorothy) Gutridge of Cleveland, Ohio, Hilbert and Robert Reese of Selma and Gus (Austella) Reese of Columbia, S.C.; one daughter, Mary (Alphonaso) Cook of Selma; 17 grandchildren, Dwayne, Nathan, Christopher, Douglas, Rodney, DJuan, Byron, Derrick, Christopher, Bill, Jarvis, Jennifer, Alnita, Dionne, Monica, Peyton and Ashley; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; three sisters, Callie Reese and Martha Effinger (twin) of Selma and Ella Mitchell of Cliffwood, N.J.; dear and close family friends, Mary (Sammy Lee) McCord and Donetta Barlow all of Selma; and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lucy Gutridge and six brothers, Robert, Lacy, Henry, John, Arthur and David Gutridge.
Active pallbearers are nephews.
Mrs. Reese was born on March 24, 1914 in Dallas County. She confessed Christ at an early age and joined St. John P.B. Church and later joined Union Grove P.B. Church, where she remained a faithful and dedicated member. She performed many duties with the church and later serving as mother of the church. She was joined in holy matrimony to the late Dea. Gus Reese Sr. She worked for more than 25 years in the Selma School System
Lizzie Oliver
Lizzie Oliver, 78, of Selma, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002 at a local hospital.
Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Mar. 2, at Morning Star Baptist Church with the Rev. B.T. Booker officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.
Survivors include three sons, Fred Norwood of Buffalo, N.Y., Jasper (Lillie) Norwood and Harvey Norwood of Selma; three daughters, Bettie Jean Craig of Montgomery, Ola Ree Norwood of Selma and Mary (Roy) Burden of Mobile; 27 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; one son-in-law; and one daughter-in-law.
Active pallbearers are Herman Craig, Ronald Reed, Sam Craig, Andre Norwood, Lem Smith and Leon Norwood.
Mrs. Oliver was the daughter of the late Bettie and William Slaughter. She usher at Morning Star Baptist Church. She was also an Eastern Star member for 25 years.
Margaret Sanders
Margaret Sanders, 61, of Selma, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002 at a local hospital.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Lawrence Funeral Home.
Mattie B. Smith Walker
Mattie B. Smith Walker, 89, formerly of Selma, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002 in Charleston, S.C.
Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Mar. 2, at Green Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Kirk Ellison officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with Walker Mortuary directing.
Survivors include one son, David Edgar Walker Jr. (Birdie) of Charleston, S.C.; one sister, Pinkie Franklin of Birmingham; six grandchildren, Terry Walker (Patricia), Jacqueline Walker and Nancy Thomas all of Selma, David Walker III, Darren Walker of Charleston, S.C., and Natasha Freeman of Corpus Christi, Texas; 13 great-grandchildren, Andre, Raphael, Tamica (Donald), Jason, Brandon, Andrew, Lauren, Christopher, Joshua, Brianna, Gabriella, Jayla and Jaden; one great-great-grandchild, Jailyn Trishay; three nephews, Simone Allen, Dr. Renty Benjamin Franklin, Oliver Franklin; cousins, Lula Parrish, Nadine O’Neal and Phyllis Alston; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Marvin S. Walker.
Active pallbearers are deacons of Green Street Baptist Church.
Curtis Columbus Hanm
Curtis Columbus Hanm, 75, of Sprott, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002 at a Selma hospital.
Services are at 2 p.m. Friday, Mar. 1, at Hopewell Baptist Church with Dr. John Huelskoetter and Brandon Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Kirk Funeral Homes of Marion directing.
Survivors include his wife, Frances S. Hamm of Sprott; four daughters, Linda H. Taylor of Marion, Joy H. Jones of Helena, Brenda Edwards of Selma and Donna Huey of Sprott; one sister, Katherine Vines of McCalla; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Active pallbearers are Brandon Taylor, Wade Taylor, Aaron Jones, Kevin Edwards, Wade Clingar, John Holladay, Nick Harrison and Brad Walters.
Family visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Kirk Funeral Homes in Marion.
