Steve McNair

Published Sunday, July 5, 2009

He was born in Mt. Olive, Mississippi on Valentine's Day. I remember that much about him reading off his college bio.

Alcorn State had him. He won the Walter Payton Award. I remember that.

I also remember hating he went to the Oilers. Never liked Houston. Didn't like Houston because of Bum Phillips. Was glad when he moved over to the Titans.

Don't know what happened to him. Why the alcohol and the weapons.

I prefer to remember him as the college athlete with lots of promise.

Air McNair was certainly one of the greats - towards the end of his career it had to have taken superhuman effort to play through the pain his playing style left him with. His passing and yardage records still stand in the Football Championship Subdivision (nee I-AA), and how many other AA players have ever been serious contenders for the Heisman?

But - McNair never "moved over to the Titans." Team owner Bud Adams moved the team from Houston because Houston wouldn't build him a new stadium. He was also the guy that hired Bum. The first season in Tennessee (1997), which was actually played in Memphis because Nashville hadn't finished building a stadium big enough, they were the Tennessee Oilers. So technically, McNair was an Oiler until he left for Baltimore.

The circumstances surrounding his death are bizarre. From what i've read he was found-- with a very young woman-- riddled with bullets she also had a gunshot wound to the head with the gun near her.The police aren't actively looking for suspects...sounds like a murder/suicide.It was a shock to hear this, the Titans is one of my favorite NFL teams and it was largely because of him.

Looks like another case of a professional athlete having extra marital affairs with young women. In this case, looks like he just got caught and had to pay the consequence. Sad loss.

I watched most of Steve McNair's funeral via Internet and it was a most impressive service. What I thought about throughout the service was what a sad feeling I had for his wife. To know your husband was with another woman at the time of his death..How will she ever put closure to her feelings of pain, and yes, anger toward Steve. Even with all the good Steve had done for the youth, I wonder what kind of example he left in the minds of young men..Will they think it is alright to have an affair while married to the mother of their children? I am so sorry his story book life had to end this way.. I hope you will all join me in prayer for the healing of these wounds he created by his actions.
