Congratulations Selma! You have come a long way, baby!!! I am moved by your openness to social and political progress! I am old enough to remember the bad old Selma of the civil rights days.
To the person making the first comment: McCain has been on the government's payroll all his life -- first in the military, then as a Congressman, finally as a Senator. He has never held a payroll job in the private sector, never run a business or organization, and relies on his wife's inherited wealth (and her work as chairman of the beer distributing company she inherited from her father) for the income that has purchased those 7 houses. In the 19th & 20th centuries in England, McCain would be called a "gentleman" -- one who did not have to earn his living directly by his labor or the results of his business acumen because others take care of it. He was educated by the government (Annapolis) and he graduated among the bottom 5 students of his class. He has always benefitted from government-sponsored health insurance, even as a child because his father was a lifetime Navy officer. It seems to me that McCain has been "on the dole" his entire life and is the least fit to understand the needs and lives of us every day Americans. John McCain has already received his "reward" and then some from the taxpaying American public.
The election is not about "rewarding" the candidate, it is about taking care of ourselves and our country and selecting the most qualified person, regardless of race. One who has our best interests in the forefront. Barack Obama was born into an every day American family and bootstrapped himself through college and law school through scholarships and student loans. He has demonstrated a steadiness and focus, in addition to his intelligence, that I find admirable. I am voting for him because he is serious and the problems this country faces require more serious consideration that "rewarding" a candidate for serving in the military.

Omig*d!! The racist wingnuts are creeping back out of the primordial ooze! It's like being in a 1950-1960's time-warp with you people! Once again, you are speaking out of fear and ignorance (you predicted the same thing if the Civil Rights and Voting acts passed. Have those predictions come true for you?). If you would read Obama's book, "The Audacity of Hope", you would understand that little of what you state is true about what he thinks or wants to do -- it's just some made-up wingnut slime that you take at face value because it justifies your prejudices and fears. Have some faith in your fellow Americans, even if they aren't just like you.
As Stephen Colbert says, "The truth does tend to have a liberal bias."
Oh, and by the way, it's the right wing that has been most vociferous in opposing the public financing of campaigns and campaign spending limits. And they/you were correct: it does interfere with free speech. The average donation to the Obama campaign has been $87. That is because a huge number of your fellow Americans know it is in their best interests to participate in political campaigns, not just to let the fat-cats pay for them and then, in back rooms, write the legislation so it favors their industries not the interests of the American people. We know how well that has worked for us recently.
Finally, a majority of our fellow Americans will vote for a candidate who represents their interests, not fat cat interests.
