This is not surprising news..... just right down the road in Lowndes County there is one of the top ten poorest counties in the nation. They don't have much, but they do have a gaming center.
On AP analysis: Dallas County No. 14 in nation as stressed county

Bama, go back and read your last comment and you will see how dumb it sounds.
Are you for real when you say that society SHOULDN'T HAVE to abide by the words written in the initial constitution?
No wonder people CAN NOT answer this question: Who lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue?
But CAN answer this one: Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
MERCY!
(and would it be wrong to uphold the ten commandments as the law of the land?)

archangelsk, Yes, I agree that more needs to be done in Selma .... and I agree with your comment "This area needs a concerted effort put towards getting the necessary resources for a major public works project that would address many current needs in addition to addressing future needs in creating opportunities for growth and investment. " We both also agree that businesses aren't likely to step forward to provide this resource for the citizens of Selma (and why should they? They didn't create the problem!) so what to do? Wait on the government to fix it? I think not. It created many of the problems in the first place. I ain't giving them another shot at the cure! On another note, congrats on choosing the profession of teaching. I am one, too. I never saw my job as raising kids, though. I do have an influence but have never believed I could raise them. The streets are raising them before they come to me. Maybe it is the age issue, but high schoolers don't want to be raised. They barely want to be taught. I guess we can agree to disagree and do so agreeably. Peace!

archangelsk, you said "people in Selma need government in their lives".
Please, oh please, don't paint with such a broad brush.
I don't need the government in my life. The government can not raise children. The government can not make healthy or strong marriages. So far, the government hasn't put any food on my table or given me a job. In short, the government can not make people do THE RIGHT THING.
If it isn't inside a person to make the right choices, then the government won't make them do it either.
You can make all the rules/laws in the world and still some folks won't follow them.
And don't even get me started on government run health care!

Charlie is one of the nicest, most unassuming people I have ever met. He makes children feel special. He makes art accessible to everyone. I wish you guys could see his place in Pink Lilly, Alabama! Thanks for making art fun, Tin Man!

hope4Selma, I agree with a lot of your statements. However, a new building will not make the teachers teach any better.
And I have believed for a long time that Selma High students deserved a better facility.
I think that a new high school should have been built YEARS ago without a bond.
Folks, face it. There is plenty of money in the schools. I know the money is misspent. You can see this especially in Selma. Just look at Dallas County and Selma City. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians. Too many supervisors. Too many head of this, incharge of that. There is money in education.
There was money years ago to maintain Selma High and yet it wasn't.
Ask yourself "Why?"

popdukes, that video is from a selma high in California. Not all of the videos on youtube that say Selma High are actually from this Selma High. The one you posted the other day IS from this Selma High.

oh, and I don't give a hoot about tenure. It only protects BAD TEACHERS.

leo71 and nowhining, the two of you sound like you would like for the teachers to do the jobs of the parents.
As a teacher (who has taught many years in local public high schools) let me say that although it is true that better teachers are needed, it is just as important for parents to do their job at home.
I can not raise children who are already "grown" when they get to high school.
Kids are raising themselves these days. Parents are too busy being selfish. If you can't control your kids at home, how can I be expected to control them at school?
I am speaking to Selma, not just you two. The two of you probably have good kids. I say that because you are reading the paper and appear to care about the local school system. You are in the minority, though.

After looking at the video tour of Duke's new house, I am wondering if anyone knows of a cult looking for a leader? Just a little job hunting.....
