I think it is sad that traditional Halloween activities have become too dangerous for children to enjoy. Trunk or treat is a safe alternative, but it will never compare to the Halloween experiences kids could have if our neighborhoods were safer.

WarEffort, I thinks one of the reasons that the cops in Selma do not patrol the areas they know crime will be is because they are either scared or in cohoots with the criminals. Please, no one start an argument about me pointing out the fact that we have corrupt cops in Selma. I know that not every Selma police officer is corrupt or even the majority, but there are still some that have not been weeded out yet.

I notice everyone mentioning bad or lack of parenting in Selma that inevitably leads to youth crime. Patsy Riley has immplented the parenting hotline in the state of Alabama. I want to call it the PAL hotline, but I am not sure. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to have community parenting classes and advertise her hotline, especially for young mothers and fathers that are really too young to know what to do.

Another thing to do would be to step up our policies on deadbeat dads and do something about them. Maybe if there were consequences some of them would at least reconsider walking out. Crap, has anyone watched Maury lately. I swear there are more deadbeat dads than good ones nowadays!

dabear5000, I think what happened with parents parenting at home is that too many kids are having kids. How is a kid supposed to raise another kid if they still need parenting themselves?

Sharon, the article is referring to healing the wounds of the past. Forgive me but I thought we were all discussing the article.I guess you lost sight of the initial point of the conversation. By the way, I did not mention anything about neglecting to share the full facts of a story. I am well aware of teh horrors slavery used to and still does entail. I did not even reference telling a story anyway. It seems as if you are the one looking for an argument by picking at particular segments of comments.Seeing as I have said nothing argumentative in any of my comments to you, I thought you would appreciate an intelligent conversation that included differing opinions. However, it seems like you simply wish to stick to your own opinions blindly and ignore those of others. That last part can be taken argumentatively since you are looking for one anyway.

I am all for a multicultural school board because our school system is multicultural. Voting for color is wrong, but assuming any one of color is incapable and corrupt is wrong as well. Whodat, do not take that at a jab at you because I undertsand exactly where you are coming from in your comment. I think the citizens of Selma should have to vote blindly, only basing their decisions on a list of qualifications and accomplishments without names or faces. Then, we would have the school board we needed.

Sharon,
I really have to ask you about your comments. You seem to be an infomed perosn who appreciates history. However, do you really believe the way you are presenting yourself and your history allows healing? It seems with the multitude of racist comments you have rebutted with in these arguments that you are doing nothing more than perpetuating black hatred for whites, which perpetuates vice versa, all because of what dead people did to one another in the past. I have visited the slavery museum and enjoyed my experience, but the ladies who run it do not sound anything like you. You are still laying blame, whereas, they are embracing everyone as brothers and sisters despite skin color and past oppression. Intelligent individuals should be much more careful of hypocrisy than you are being currently. It does not sound like you have healed in the way you wish others to.
