How is any of this going to get done if there is no one left to do it? I have a suggestion, stop living in a dream world. Crack down on crime, do whatever it takes to attract industry, and stop living in 1965. It works in other places and I'm sure it will work in Selma too if you just try.

Popdukes, don't you know that this is a forum for beating each other up over race? We are not here to discuss how to improve the local economy?

It's interesting how many of us are no longer residents of Selma but still have so much of Selma in our hearts.

I hate that my earlier comment was deleted by the site staff. I thought it was pretty funny. Anyway, what people do on their break time is their own business, right?

The local Walmart closing is simply good business. They are getting robbed blind at night and cannot afford to stay in business if all their merchandise is going out the back door. Also, I think Selma should take comfort in the fact that the Montgomery Walmart is closing at 11 and the Selma store is staying open till Midnight. This proves that as bad as Selma is, at least it isn't as bad as Montgomery.

I have a question. I no longer live in Selma but keep up with what's going on there via the internet. There sure are a lot of people that are running for the school board. Is this a paid position now? I have a hard time believing some of the people running are really that concerned about the Selma city schools. Someone please clarify this for me. Thanks

No Veritas, Barrack is not better. Not anywhere close! And he never will be. Stop believing everything is awesome because there is a black president in office instead of a white man and pay attention to what's going on. You may not care what's happening to our country but there are a lot of us that still do and we aren't going to let the democratic party ruin this country.

Outoftowner, don't let the actions of a bunch of bunch of idiots influence your view of small southern towns. There are a lot of great towns in the south that don't have this type of behavior. They just aren't anywhere around here. The blackbelt in central Alabama is not representative of most of Alabama. Plain and simple, there are alot of ignorant people in this area. This is not going to change. Ever! There are a lot of good, well meaning people that try every day to make positive change but stupidity breeds stupidity. The black leaders in the black belt don't do anything except continually contribute to this backward way of thinking. Albert Turner, Rose and Hank Sanders, etc. This is uncivilized behavoir plain and simple. Until these so-called leaders actually try and change the way these people think and stop nurturing distrust in educated people, violence and stupidity will continue to be a way of life in the blackbelt.

The problems facing the Teppers Building are the same that every other building in downtown faces. Macncheese, you got one thing right, the previous owners (Rose and Hank) didn't do anything to help that building. But very few of the owners of the downtown buildings have kept their buildings in good repair. Take a look at the old YMCA building, the old Kyser's building, the buildings along the river. I know from personal observation that it would take a tremendous amount of money to get those buildings in habitable condition. The Teppers building has suffered from deadbeat previous owners far to long to expect a quick fix. Like all Selmians, I would love to see that building restored but I don't think the FF is the group that is going to do it. They will soon be gone and any money they had with them. Duke's already bailed out. The only thing that is going to save that building, as well as the other's, is for local Selmian's that have the money and the desire to spend it to invest in the building and hope for the best. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone is that stupid.

Jeff Davis Ave. has been an eyesore for as long as I can remember. It is lined with houses and buildings that should be torn down to get rid of the drug dealers and criminals that inhabit them. You feel that you are taking your life in your hands every time you drive down it. Spending $500,000 to put on curbs and gutters on this street is not going to improve anything or do anything for the city either. That money would be better spent improving Highland Ave. That highway is heavily traveled by motorists passing through Selma. If it looked halfway inviting, maybe more people would stop and eat, shop etc., which would improve the tax base of the city and help fund other services. Spending half a million dollars on a lightly used street in downtown Selma is the most idiotic thing that the morons that run Selma have ever done!

My God. You people are driving me crazy. $8 million dollars being thrown away. Why not just stand on top of that bridge and dump the money right into the Alabama River. I have an idea that is guaranteed to fix Selma. Hold a special election, vote to raise taxes with the money allocated to the police dept., school board, and EDA. Then triple the size of the police dept., get serious about ridding Selma of crime, build new schools to educate the children of Selma, and let the EDA fork out money to industries to get them to locate in Selma and bring jobs. Good schools, jobs, and a safe place to live is what Selma needs. After that, the rest will take care of itself. Oh yeah, one more thing. Quit living in 1965. The rest of America has moved on. Get a clue and do the same.
