Morgan beats Pike in region play

The No. 4-ranked Morgan Academy volleyball team defeated Pike 3-0 Monday in region play at the Morgan gym.

Set one ended at 25-17 behind strong service runs led by Dee Griffin and April Clark.

In the second set, Morgan started with a 4-0 score only to have Pike tie it at 7-all.

Anne Woodruff served to pull Morgan ahead to 11-9.

The team fought to go ahead 23-12 with Summer Pugh serving and the score ended 25-17 on a Rachel Gomes ace.

The third set was a battle, with Pike staying ahead through 9 points.

Morgan finally got ahead, 16-15 behind Catherine Armstrong’s serve only to have Pike tie it again.

Mary Peyton Zimmerman served to pull Morgan ahead 21-20. The team continued to fight and won 25-22, with Clark getting a strong block to seal the match.

Morgan is at home Thursday against No. 3 Kingwood.

The junior varsity plays at 4 p.m. with varsity to follow.
