Devils relish big win
Published Thursday, September 10, 2009
MAPLESVILLE — Coach Brent Hubbert and his assistants talked to the No.4 Maplesville football team Wednesday about Friday’s game against R.A. Hubbard.
Hubbard, which was ranked No. 3 in the state Class 1A poll, came to the No. 6 Devils’ stadium Friday with a 4-0 record against Maplesville. And Hubbert knew all about them.
“We had only played them four times in history,” he said after the 20-0 victory. “We lost to them once for the state championship and three times in the semis.”
Hubbert has a history with Hubbard. He played on the Maplesville team in the 10th grade that lost the first game to R.A. Hubbard. His father was the Maplesville coach.
This week’s opponent for the Devils will be Sunshine.

Since Mr. Wolfe did such a good job on reporting players and coaches names for the Maplesville football team, maybe he can be assigned to report on the Morgan Academy game this week.

Don't know if you read non-online version or not, but Mr. Wolfe actually didn't cover Maplesville. He covered Wilcox-Meadowview last week and the Selma game was covered by an STJ reporter too.
It's pretty common practice for papers under one umbrella to request sister papers to send stories if an area team is playing. Obviously with 3 area teams (2 playing each other in meadowview-wilcox and the biggest public school) at home, they had to hit the local games.
According to google maps, Kingwood is a 2-hour drive from Selma. Too far to drive with local options available. So like the Southside and Maplesville games another Boone paper sent over its writeup. By my count there were 5 stories on 6 area teams and 2 wrapups on others. Not bad from my view.
If the STJ couldn't get in touch with Morgan's coach, would you rather they published nothing at all?
