WCCS wins first season match
Published Friday, September 4, 2009
SELMA — Concordia College’s Jacqui Virgil was proud of her volleyball team’s serving against Wallace Community College Selma on Thursday.
“We have been working pretty hard on that,” said Virgil, a first-year coach whose squad managed a string of winners in the second set.
The Lady Patriots of WCCS, however, wouldn’t be denied their first regular-season victory of the year by downing the Hornets 25-21, 27-25 and 25-23.
“We had a breakdown in communication” in the second set, WCCS coach April Harper said after the match to make her team’s record 1-1. “It was nerves. Once they get past that and what’s expected of them, they’ll be OK.”
Virgil said the Hornets will tweak some things and work on communication as the season continues.
“We’ll be making adjustments,” she said. “Volleyball is something of a novelty at Concordia College.”
Harper said she certainly wasn’t disappointed after the three-set sweep.
“We still need to concentrate on our communication and nerves,” she said. “We’ve got the talent, so I know we can win. And the support tonight was overwhelming; we had fans standing outside the court and sitting on the steps.”
