Wenonah spoils Selma homecoming

SELMA — Selma took advantage of a bad snap on a Wenonah punt Thursday night.

Wenonah got the bigger advantage over a sputtering Saints offense as the Dragons spoiled homecoming for Selma with a 12-8 victory at Memorial Stadium.

Wenonah (5-3) scored the winning touchdown with 2:42 to play when senior quarterback Brandon Allen threw a 21-yard middle screen pass to junior wide receiver Ryan Lewis.

Then the Dragons defense intercepted with 2:00 to play, and later shut down Selma’s defense again with 45 seconds left.

For Selma coach Foster Davis, big plays spelled the difference again.

“We came out running the ball pretty well,” he said after the Saints drove to the Wenonah 31 before Lewis intercepted a Kendrick Woods pass. “Our defense played well, except for that one breakdown in the fourth quarter. But it was the big plays again that hurt us.”

Wenonah scored with 4:40 left in the second quarter on an 8-yard run by senior running back Cartez Pickett.

Then Selma scored after Wenonah was forced to punt from its 35-yard line, and the snap sailed over the punter’s head at 1.6 seconds in the first half. On the next, Selma senior quarterback Keaton Spears threw an 11-yard pass to senior Johnathan Harris as the horn sounded. Spears ran the two-point conversion for the 8-6 lead at intermission.

Neither team could sustain a drive until the Dragons took over on their own 20 to start the fourth quarter. Fourteen plays later, Wenonah completed the 80-yard drive with the go-ahead touchdown.

After Selma’s defense held Wenonah to three downs and out from the Dragons’ 33, four Saints passing attempts fell incomplete.

Wenonah took a knee to end the game.

The loss leaves Selma at 3-6 after its final home game.

The Saints end the season next Friday at Greene County.
