Selma man sentenced for sexual abuse
Published Friday, October 23, 2009
SELMA — A Selma man arrested for attempted rape on April 15, 2008, pleaded guilty to sexual abuse first-degree.
On Wednesday, Circuit Court Judge Marvin Wiggins sentenced Pelvin Brown, 48, to 20 years in prison, of which he will serve one year of the sentence and have five years probation.
“Pelvin Brown and the victim knew one another,” Dallas County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Bert Allison said. “[On April 6, 2008] the offender forced himself into her house and then tried to force himself on her.”
The case went to trial, but shortly before it was charged to the jury Brown pleaded guilty.

He pled guilty and was sentenced to 20 years but will serve one??? What kind of justice is that?
IMO, he should be put UNDER the jail! We need judges that will hand out tough sentences and send a message to these creeps that they will pay, not just get a smack on the hand!

Considering the judge, the sentence is typical. We will be seeing this name in the paper again.

To me this type of "sentence" does nothing but encourage more of this type of activity.
Wiggins and other judges like him need to go. We need STRONG judges that aren't afraid to give meaningful sentences.

Well I look at it like this. We have a messed up Judicial system in Selma anyway. They are not going to sentence people correctly or nothing like that. It's all about who you know in Selma!

And we wonder why Selma is having so many challenges with CRIME! If you are going to take my money through taxes, at least make sure you put it to GOOD USE! This type of justice encourages rather than discourage criminals!

1 year in jail, 5 years probation for attempted rape. So this woman's dignity was worth only 1 year? I would hate to see the sad sentence for a bona fide rape. What's it like 1 1/2 years? With this judicial system, there is no deterant for society to act civilized.

I thought Wiggins was suspended from duty due to the findings of his "family bias" involvement on a judgement. What ever happened to that?

Holy crap! Let's think for a second. Considering the many crimes that take place in Selma and the few sentences served, we have more criminals on the streets than law abiding citizens. For crying out loud, we walk by rapists, drug dealers, and murderers every day in this town and can do nothing about it. God forbid if something happens to a good citizen because the crime will go unpunished since Wiggins is afraid to lay hard sentences on members of his race in an effort to keep getting re-elected. Being soft on black crime or white crime does no good to anyone! Stop trying to make yourself look good to constituents because with all the felons you let out no one who likes you is legally allowed to vote for you!!

disgruntled, I'm with you. I don't care who someone is, who their daddy is, what color or what religion they are, if they do the crime they need to DO THE TIME!
It's time we held our judges accountable for the sentences they are (or are not) handing out. This goes for all judges not just Judge Wiggins.

You think that's how he's getting re-elected disgruntled? PLEEEEEAAAASSSSEEEE!!!! You mean to tell me that the people committing these crimes are actually casting votes? You mean to tell me that law abiding blacks in Selma will not vote for him if he gives a HARD sentence to members of his own race that are breaking the law? You are not disgruntled, you are illogical with a thought pattern like that. Of course upstanding citizens of ALL RACES in Selma are tired of the criminal element breaking laws and endangering lives! I would LOVE for ANY judge to THROW the book at these criminals for once and for ALL!!!

OMG, read before you write. I'm going to leave it to you to figure out how you misinterpreted everything I wrote since you think you are so logical.

Just think it is also ok according to the state that if your 16 yr old daughter gives consent to sex it is not against the law. It is not considered Statutory Rape. But you are held accountable for them until they are 19 if they do something wrong.

Brown will be OUT in a few days-or weeks--the time he served in the Dallas county jail will allow TIMED SERVED--toward the over all time HE was given by the Judge---Don't you people KNOW yet that the CROOKS have more RIGHTS that any VICTIM alive or dead every had. It's not just the JUDGES fault it's the Trial Lawyers and way the LAW reads. That gives these PEOPLE who break the Law an EASY OUT in most cases. CIVIL RIGHTS covers so much more today than it was intended to. Mostly it protects the MOST WANTED from REAL JUSTICE, and the crimes they commit.
It enable's them to return to the FREE WORLD and do the same CRAP over and over again. With only a SLAP on the hand. And a LOT of the CHURCH folks WHO think they are teaching these CROOKS and sending them down the path of GOODNESS in jail are ONLY telling them a WAY to work the SYSTEM in their favor. A lot of people are to BLAME for them returning to YOUR NEIGHORHOODS as FAST as they do. It's not just the JUDGE.

WAIT WAIT don't bad mouth the judges around here ..... They are all elected ! It just goes to show once in office in this area always in office. People in Selma , Dallas County and this area are to freakin LAZY to do anything else. Look the same ol folks get elected get fat lazy and questionable ethics. Not ALL are guilty of such deplorable activites but just goes to show term limits should be for ALL politicians.

This is shameful, and it shows a profound lack of value and respect for women This individual pleads guilty, and he is given a slap on the hand for forcing himself into the home of a women and attempting to force himself on her sexually. He should receive the maximum sentence. Judges please consider your decision on the larger community. Just look at the recent cases in Florida, the sexual molestation of children and the resulting murders, or the sexual crime and murders in other states. Is this the pathway you are leading us. I understand you must uphold the law, but this ruling can not be in line with the sentencing guidelines, or justified. Writers please join me in asking the DA to appeal the ruling of the bench to the Appeal's Court in behalf of the people of Selma and Dallas County.
I am told this is the second sexual crime committed by this person, is this true?
