The victim was struck in the right arm.

All right here we go again. Somebody gets shot outside a downtown club and everyone is going to assume that the night clubs downtown are the problem. Guess what they are not.
The problem downtown is not the night clubs. Inside one of these nigh clubs you are safe. The problem is outside of the night clubs.
At the special meeting held some months ago in council chambers all of the downtown night club owners were gathered together and asked about how to resolve the issues that were taking place outside of the night clubs. A conclusion was reached that a larger outside police presence was needed in order to keep people from gathering outside of the night clubs. If you stop the congregating from happening outside of the clubs then you eliminate the problem. What was a 19 year old doing hanging out in front of a club in the first place.
If the police department takes the time to stop the gathering of people outside of the night clubs then you all but eliminate the problem. Hey it's just an opinion, and everyone is entitled to one.

You are absolutely right. First off, a 19 year old has no business being in or around a club downtown "legally". It's junky clubs like this one that continue to cast a dark shadow on the one's that do operate professionally and civilized. How many more people have to be shot downtown before the city or cops shut THIS club down? Warning after warning after warning has been given, yet, it is still in operation without any extra security. This sounds totally indicative of Selma as a whole. We the citizens have to suffer at the hands of thugs all while the city continues to sweep the crime problem and low police staffing under the rug. Until drastic measures are taken, these thugs will continue this pattern of criminal activity. Where are the priorities?

Gosh, I didn't read anything in this piece about it being the night clubs fault; however, how are the police going to take the time to stop the gathering outside these nights clubs when they are already stretched to the limit with minor things like rapes, robberies, shootings (other than at the clubs) and burglaries etc. Seems like to me that the clubs should take some of that cover charge money, that I know they are reporting as income and maybe hire some off duty police for the outside so they know they will have them (police) there. It's a shame that people can not go to a night club and be civilized enough to not have to shoot someone to have a good time whether thay are inside or out.

Where are the extra officers going to come from? I'd rather have the few officers available (see the editorial from two days ago) patroling my neighborhood, not babysitting adults and teens outside of nightclubs.
Now if the clubs wanted to ante up to pay the extra costs for the extra patrols, then that is fine. But as it is, I imagine they are draining way more of the cities finances than they give back in tax revenues.
It should be a simple business decision on the cities part based on the principle of diminished returns. If the police have to constantly go there and investigate shootings then they are costing more than they contribute, so shut them down.
This doesn't even take into account the aspect of all the crime they attract and other businesses they deter from locating in the area.
Another point is that they have simply become a public safety hazard.

It's high time for concerned citizens to have a community meeting to resolve the violence plaguing Selma. The finger pointing is getting us nowhere. There are myriad problems that have led to Selma's decline and while we can argue about which one's are the most prevalent or who should take the blame, we should all agree that it's going to take EVERYONE to get the city back on track.
I think this is the only answer, especially seeing as though the city doesn't have the resources to do it without us. Would you all be willing to participate in such a meeting?

This is a good idea. Crime here is rampart, yet there is no real strategic plans to address it. We as citizens must begin to discuss this in a forum that will require some level of redress. Crime in Selma has gotten out of hand and me for one is tired of it.
I have stated on this site previously that any business that sales alcohol to the public should be required to present its security plan before the City issues a license to operate. The City must then monitor to ensure the approved plan is followed. This can very easily be implemented; it only takes the will of the people that we have elected to represent us to enact this requirement. The elected officials spend too much time debating non productive and insignificant personality issues that adds no value to the City of Selma. Our local government business has gone lacking and it is evident in the decreased level of services we are receiving. Local government and the elected officials should be more proactive and not just reactive.

The problem isn't a lack of police. It is the general thugery attitude. A person shouldn't have to have an officer watching him to not act like a criminal.

To reply back to some of the points that were raised in posts. Off duty police and sherrif deputies are not allowed to work in or outside of night clubs, and private security has no authority outside the front door of the clubs.
Also I am not suggesting that extra police be hired. I am just suggesting that the ones that we do have perform their jobs. They are already patroling the streets in front of the night clubs downtown. I am just suggesting that when they see crowds gathering in front of the clubs they disperse them. I have seen Selma city police officers using the wi-fi in front of the St. James Hotel while on duty in their police cars, but they don't have time to disperse crowds in front of the clubs. Also we all do know that is certain clubs downtown that continually have problems. All of the clubs do not deserve to be labled because of the bad ones.
So everyone get your facts straight before casting stones at the clubs.

I checked and the St. James pays off duty officers to sit in front and watch their patrons' cars. They are not paying them to police the night clubs.
Ask an officer and they will tell you there are not enough of them on busy night to work the clubs. The clubs need to bear the cost of this extra protection if it is needed, just like the St. James does. If the rules don't allow this, then simply change the rules.

Good point Toad. I have inquired myself about the out door security and police officers ARE allowed to work outside, but NOT inside. It has been done before with past problems at the same clubs.
As far as the officers sitting at WiFi hubs, if you would do some research a little more in depth you would find that effective 2010 all reports will be done paperless and they will either have to be downloaded directly into the server or sent to the server via e-mail. I was told accident reports have already gone paperless and many of them who have laptops have already begun to do their reports paperless. So unless you want all of the police cars to be sitting at the police department and not on their assigned beats then as you said, before chunking rocks know your facts.
You know what is really curious to me is the fact that you brought up police cars in the WiFi areas; however, I have also noticed deputy sheriffs cars in the same areas and I don't think they do accident reports at all. I wonder what they are doing?
Posted by kevykev (anonymous) on October 13, 2009 at 2:46 p.m. (Suggest removal)
It's not as easy as "Simply" changing the rules. There are liability and insurance issues involved. If you would do a little further checking you would realize this. The officer that I saw in front of the St. James was not working there he was on duty and using their wi-fi.
As far as the St. James using off duty officers for vehicle protection I spend a lot of time in that area and I personaly have not seen any off duty officers working there. There are also constant patrols in the area that need to be focused on. How hard is it to step out of the car and disperse a crowd. If they find that hard then maybe our local police force needs to be evaluated and retooled.
It's easy to sit here and type out what you think should be done, but it's another thing to get these things implemented. I have been involved in meetings about crime in our fair city on more than one occasion. A lot of valid ideas are brought up, but how many actually get implemented. Until we all begin to expect more out of our mayor, council members, and local police force we will not see anything other than what we see every day.
As far as the clubs paying for extra security, why should they. Their tax dollars are already going to pay the salries of the officers that are supposed to be protecting us.

Many of you have some good ideas. This will probably be deleted, but we all know there was no problem like this in Sema 40 years ago.

My "glory" days? Why do you think I was even around 40 years ago? Were you around 40 years ago? "Stop looking back"? If I stopped looking back when I'm on the streets of Selma, I'm liable to get mugged, and so are you! This has nothing to do with the Klan, or anything else like that. and you know it. If you don't think it was safer in Selma, Montgomery, Detroit, St. Louis, Chicago or even Uniontown, then than now, you are either stupid or living in a dreamworld..For once in your life, wake up and accept reality!

Its always the police dept/sheriffs dept fault that momma and daddys dont control their children any more. Everyone is up in arms about 19 year olds around clubs .... the problem starts earlier than that. Some parents are to drunk too stoned to lazy to raise their children and it is law enforcements fault the schools fault its the "systems" fault where does it stop? Wait ! Maybe it's the mayors fault or the governor! Why stop there it MUST be President Obama's fault! Stop making excuses stop making MORE babies and raise the ones you have. When YOU as parents do your job THEN you can complain about someone else not doing THEIRS

The sad but true part to all of this is, the problems we are living with today were created long ago. The give-a-way programs that were meant to help people get a start in life have made government dependants out of the vast majority of people who were enrolled in them. When it became a profession to spit out children just to get a check, free place to live, and all the free food you can eat, the system failed. Generation after generation have birthed children into this world without any concept of parenthood, only a dollar amount per child. Adults having children who are unsuitable to be parents and those same children having children without any idea or direction of how to be a parent. It's kinda like Jerry McGuire, just show me the money. Mindset is, as long as I get a check I don't care what this child does. Go, go raise yourself in this jungle we call America and when you get killed or jailed I will blame thee for my short comings as a parent. Thee is typically the white man. Most often when you point that finger of blame, don't be in front of a mirror because that image you see is likely the one you should bare the blame.

I think it's rather ironic how the same government that set up this welfare, low income housing system are the same ones that expect this demographic of people to cast their votes for them generation after generation...and actively campaign in this territory. It's also rather ironic the same people that always talk about the times of plantations, slavery and being endentured servants are in some rather similar circumstances with living in gov style housing, birthing kids for checks and holding true to these politicians (masters) just to stay on the government plantation. You are being held hostage and enabled to stay on these democrat programs. Break the cycle. Using this system to supplement your income makes you just as guilty too.
When you go blindly cast your ballot and mark "all" democrats like THEY tell you to...then you are doing nothing more than voting yourself into that system without one independent, objective thought. I would hate to know how many people went through "the struggle" to grant certain people the right to vote, then I just dragged up to the polls to mark one box to fulfill someone elses mission and agenda.
Posted by Wedgie (anonymous) on October 14, 2009 at 2:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)
That cycle will NEVER be broken because what is easier, getting out and finding a job and then having to work for what you want and have or have sex, have babies, walk to the mail box to get check(s) and every 4 years cast a vote and repeat cycle. Sex and babies seem to be repeated every 9 months for some. I am not being a butt about this but it is true. It is sad when a child does not even know who their father is due to the amount of deposits that were made in depository. This is becoming more and more prevalent as we regress. They (government) can speculate all they like on what will fix the economy but until someone steps up to the plate and change things it will only get worse.

Actually pittbull, I did post about Market Day. Matter of fact, maybe you need to go back and read my comments in DETAIL. That might help you dispel some of your engrained cultural ignorance about a day where vendors sell art, food and merchandise. But then again, I wouldn't expect anything less from someone like yourself that has worked the system by making excuses and playing the race card every chance you get. I wouldn't ever expect some valid, logical excuse or admission of responsibility to anything that makes sense.
And by the way, for your sake, it's probably a good thing the keyboard has nothing to do with IQ. It's a good thing a grade isn't given either. WOW. I want to congratulate you for not being on welfare or living on a government plantation either. I feel better knowing my tax dollars aren't contributing to the miseducation, mentality or ignorance that you continue to show us on your post.
