Concordia crushes UTA 66-0

Published Sunday, October 11, 2009

SELMA — Concordia College football coach Shepherd Skanes thought about which players stood out during Saturday’s 66-0 shellacking of the University of Texas-Arlington at Memorial Stadium.

Trying to single out players wasn’t easy. He praised the entire team after almost everyone participated in the beatdown.

“Of course, the defense looked pretty strong today,” said Skanes, who honored the team’s seniors at halftime during the Hornets’ final home game. “Everyone wanted the seniors to go about with a bang.”

Who would get the game ball, coach?

“If I had to give one, I would probably give it to Louis Manning,” he said. “I was glad to see him play well.”

Manning, a 5-foot-9, 195-pound junior from Atlanta, scored two touchdowns — one each from each side of the line.

In the second quarter, running back Manning took a pitchout around left end for a 5-yard score with 1:13 left until halftime. Eddie Cribbs’ PAT run put the Hornets up 40-0 at halftime.

Then in the fourth quarter, punt returner Manning snatched up a Mavericks kick out of the end zone and returned it 22 yards for Concordia’s final points. The clock showed 13:46 left.

The dark cloud over the day’s victory was the loss of placekicker Harrison Ellison for the season. The senior from Birmingham injured his knee in the first half during an extra-point kick.

Another great win against a fraternity team. Texas-Arlington will be replaced by Dallas County High School on Concordia's 2010 schedule.

Redbird it seems you were once a student of Concordia and did not graduate so you blame everyone but youself. You have made a living dogging out the football team and the school. What is your point, what is your motivation??

If the Hornets run the table of there remaining game this will be a plus for there program. Playing these type teams helps build the team by allowing the younger player a chance to play and makes the team feel good. They have played 3 teams of higher calibrate and gave them a run for there money.

troblemaka, are you kidding me? I failed to graduate from Concordia? Don't you know that everybody that enrolls at Concordia graduates from Concordia? In the front door, then out the back door with a "degree". I take offense to your "dogging" comment. That's an insult to our canine friends. But if you insist using that word, I would suggest this; Concordia pretty much does that all by itself by having such an inferior academic reputation in this state. I guess you might call it "self-dogging"!

I agree, another feather in Concordias hat! Coach Skanes has done a fine job recruiting and putting a quality team together. His coaches also deserve praise. The only problem with the schedule next season will probably be finding teams willing to put Concordia on "their" schedule!

It's pretty easy to find the kind of athletes that Concordia recruits. All Skanes has to do is hang out at athletic departments at other schools when grades are passed out and he can pick up those who lose their eligibility, or those that have been kicked off the team for one reason or another. Everyone is aware that most of Concordia's athletes can't get in anywhere else because of academics. Also, check to see where those transfers come from. Then tell me why they choose to play at Concordia? If I were another coach, I would not play them either until the "Cons"(I like the name better than Hornets) play by the same rules that everyone else does. Then of course, rules really don't matter at Concordia, do they?

First of all, I want to state that I attended Concordia during the 2008-2009 School Year and I plan on returning in the Spring 2010 semester. I don't appreciate the negativity that CCS is always receiving on this website. It's a shame that this is the local paper and the local college can't even get any positive recognition. True enough Concordia has its downfalls, but what institution doesn't. I'm from Washington, D.C. and now I live in Maryland, and I will be returning to Selma. This is because I love the ATMOSPHERE of Concordia, the teachers are awesome, the student are all striving to achieve something even if this is their second chance! Some of the students don't have a choice of going to a more prominent institution, CCS is all they have. Unlike me, I had a choice and I still have a choice. My SAT score as well as my ACT were above average for CCS. I was accepted to Lincoln University in PA as well as the University of Maryland any many others. I have also attended one of the best colleges in Delaware named Wesley College and yet I find myself longing to be back at Concordia College-Selma. I am not a criminal, con, reject or failure. I am one of the students that did not have to submit to Concordia because I didn't have a choice, but because I love the school and I want to be apart of what it is trying to accomplish! As far as the football team is concerned, they are doing an awesome job! I support them whole-heartedly from thousands of miles away. I hope that you hypocrites who probably live in Selma and have nothing else in life to do, but to criticize Concordia instead of lifting it up and pushing it forward, find something to do with your time. Thanks so much for reading even if you did not enjoy! MAB

libitimb:
Since you obviously can read, construct sentences, and organize your thoughts and present them competently, and if you were in deed, accepted at Maryland , I would agree that your ACT score is above average for a Concordia student. What is the average score there? Probably somewhere in the neighborhood of ten, I suspect, since the only true requirement for admittance is to have a pulse. Your reasons for wanting to go to Concordia are debatable. You love the atmosphere? What atmosphere? Is it : Academic? Collegiate? A Tradition? Historical? Compared to other institutions, minimal. You chose Concordia over Maryland? Bad choice. I cannot think of a worse decision. Who do you think is going to get the job if one applicant has a degree from Concordia and the other from the University of Maryland, with all other factors being equal? You "long to be back at Concordia-Selma"? You have not convinced me that it is for any other reason but that you do not want to be challenged academically. Think about it logically, why would anyone from another state want to come to a small, nondescript school with an academic reputation that is suspect, to say the least? It's simple. It is E A S Y. Concordia is just another example of many who take advantage of today's society that wants "something for nothing". At Concordia, one can get a diploma without the strenuous effort and work that goes with it. In this case, as in most, you "get what you pay for". You said you had a choice. Then think hard about this "choice"before you make your final decision.

Redbird you seem to have so much hatred in your heart. I can only imagine why... May I asked what institution of higher education did you receive a degree from? This will help me to further understand the ignorant comments that seep from your fingertips. This is my life and my choice. I am not settling for less nor am I giving in to gain something from nothing. I have a promising career with Homeland Security (look it up) and I'm only taking this time to return as a young adult to take more classes or whatever else I decide to do! You are not suppose to degrade anyone's decision as far as thier education. The way that you are going about your little tantrum is unprofessional and unethical. Respect is the last thing you deserve from me. I can prove everything that I stated in my last comment. I am currently a student elsewhere and it is neither to challenging academically or E A S Y. I am maintaining just fine, as you can read for yourself. You chose to criticize the academics, the tradition, and everything else that you can think of from Concordia's past. Academically Concordia has brought in new majors and new instructors! Check for yourself if you don't believe me. CCS also has professors from very prominent backgrounds who are very good mentors and teachers. As far as I am concerned CCS is still accredited so it must be doing something right. Also tradition...HAHA we are starting a tradition, fighting for what you believe in even if it is minimal to nothing. It may one day be bigger than you can imagine. As far as students from out of state, their are many students from as far as Michigan and Chicago who return home on breaks with the choice to stay and do whatever, but yet here we are. CCS has the reputation and "history" it has because of people like you. The students are going to act negatively because of what they hear about themslves, they will down their own school, or whatever else it takes because now they believe in the ignorance. Your problem should be the city of Selma and its crooked officials. With this being said, once the city is improved, the school has no choice but to follow. If not then I will accept your negativity. In the last 2 years CCS has been through numerous changes and WE are still trying to find the right leader for this instituion. I can remove myself from being proper and polite like I am from being raised here in Maryland and become a Selmian and get real technical on a real "hood" level with you because I am getting rather upset with your ignorance, but I won't. This is yet another reason why you should not judge everyone that steps through the gates of Concordia. Get over yourself and stop being so judgemental.
