Concordia burns UNO 78-14
Published Sunday, October 4, 2009
SELMA — For a homecoming game, Saturday’s Concordia College 78-14 victory over the University of New Orleans was made to order.
Everybody in a green and yellow uniform got a chance to play. It was a family affair.
Hornets coach Shepherd Skanes, however, expressed reservations about the visiting Privateers.
“We really didn’t know what to expect from them,” Skanes said. “They were moving the ball for a time during the second half. But it feels good to win at home, and it feels good to be 3-3.”
Scoring was early and often for the Hornets, who took a 31-0 lead after the first quarter. After Harrison Ellison’s 40-yard field goal, quarterback Larry Kerlegan tossed a 5-yard TD to Fred Rouse, Taron Squires went eight yards for one score and A.J. Ward carried twice for 56 yards (42 was the TD).
Then with 6 seconds on the first-quarter clock, freshman defensive back Jeffrey Ward got his first of two defensive touchdowns. As UNO tried a pitchout around the left end, Ward scooped up the fumble and ran about 30 yards for a touchdown.
Ward, who later scampered 72 yards through defenders to return an interception for a touchdown, said he doesn’t do anything special on defense. And the defensive schemes are pretty simple.
“We run cover 2 and cover 3 and man-to-man,” Ward said. “So it helps that it’s pretty easy. I’m playing for the ball, playing with instinct.”
Concordia College was running almost on automatic, watching UNO march from its own 22 to the Hornets’ 27-yard line before the drive stalled. Four incompletions turned the ball over to Concordia College.
On the second play from scrimmage, Kerlegan lofted a 70-yard pass to Rouse for a 37-0 lead.
The Privateers got on the scoreboard after a nine-play, 66-yard drive ended with a 23-yard scoring pass from quarterback Chris Brady to Akeem Davis.
Concordia followed with 36 yards on seven play for the TD. Kerlegan went 3 yards around right end with 5:09 until halftime.
UNO went strictly through the air, stalling out a drive with four incompletions. After Concordia fumbled at the Privateers’ 16, Brady completed a 16-yard touchdown to Josh Giambelluca with no time remaining on the clock.
Playing mostly third- and fourth-stringers in the second half, Concordia held UNO scoreless. Actually, the Hornets allowed only four first downs, and one of those came on a penalty.
Concordia opened the third quarter with 56 yrds in five plays for the score. Kerlegan hit A.J. Ward for a 35-yard TD with 13:27 left on the clock.
Linebacker Alphonso Tucker scored Concordia’s next touchdown, knocking down a Brady pass into his hands and rumbling 13 yards inside the pylon.
The final scores came on Jeffrey Ward’s 78-yard interception return, a 14-yard pass from freshman quarterback Lamar Woodson to Mason Tillman and a 50-yard scamper by Anthony Landrum.
Concordia hosts Texas-Arlington at 2 p.m. Saturday.

I'm sure you know all about flipping burgers if you "graduated"(and I use that term very loosely) from Concordia. You're right though, my favorites won't play the "mighty Hornets"(which I might add, is a little bit of exaggeration, don't you think?) They have too much class.

You are the person that wonders why would Barack Obama come to selma......With that attitude Selma will never Grow and the youth is selma will always leave the city because there is no life here..... Children these days are no old famous like you and your beliefs..... Good things happen at Concordia but your mentality keeps Selma a true Black Belt state of mind......POOR

Mr. Obama to visit Selma? Really? Wow! When is this happening? I must have missed that revelation. But you are right, I would wonder why the President would want to visit Selma, of all places. He has in hands full with health care, Iraq, Afghanistan, the economy, etc. Of course he probably would be safer in downtown Baghdad on a Saturday night than in Selma. Maybe if he kept his doors locked in the motorcade he would be all right. Perhaps his visit will be to determine how a once thriving city in the Black belt could become what it is today. I am sure the President could figure it out. Your problem, like is that you is that you fail to accept reality. I also find it interesting how you turn this discussion about a weak academic "college" that has no standards for admission or graduation into a quasi sociological or political debate.

Redbird, You just say all that because you're hiding behind your computer with a screen name. Come out to the game Saturday, and talk all that smack. Make sure you bring your G.E.D.

I could give less than a dam_ about you laughing at me. Your opinion means less than nothing. you are an evil vindictive person who likes nothing more than to see others as miserable as you are.

Redbird, I think your posts about Concordia are funny. But as for Sharon, I think her post are laced in delusion, jealousy and contains typical inferiority banter. Sorry, just being "evil" and "miserable".

Mr. Eye, I did not know you were an old white male waiting for a disability check. How did she come to that conclusion? Why is it when someone disagrees,"hate"comes into the picture? Hate has nothing to do with this. I am just stating facts known by everybody with credibility about Concordia. The bottom line: Anybody can get in and everybody can walk out with a diploma. Why do so many Selmanites have such a big chip on their shoulder about the truth? Is it because they KNOW it to be the truth and don't want to admit it?

It's so sad that one can't find the positive side to being a student, at least they're in school. I guess if some couldn't be negative, they just couldn't be. All of this because they won a ball game??? Whatever happened to saying "congratulations" and that be the end of it??....All this doesn't change the fact that the players won the game.....get a life!!!

ITS A GOOD THING WHEN YOU HAVE YOUNG PEOPLE IN SCHOOL NO MATTER IF ITS SOUTHSIDE, DALLAS CO., SELMA HIGH, CONCORDIA, OR WALLACE. THESE STUDENTS COULD BE STEALING, SELLING DRUGS, OR GETTING INTO ALOT OF TROUBLE BUT THEY CHOOSE TO GET AN EDUCATION AND PLAY SPORTS....ANYONE MENTION HOW WALLACE STUDENTS ONLY GO TO THE SCHOOL A SEMESTER JUST FOR THE REFUND CHECKS AND NEVER GO BACK.... PEOPLE LIKE REDBIRD AND EYEONYOU....HAVE NO FACTS TO STATE UNTIL U GO TO CONCORDIA AND GRADUATE FROM THERE SO SHUT THE HOLE YOU USE FOR A MOUTH

What makes you think being in school keeps them from doing all those things you mentioned? Please. When did attending school become the panacea for social problems like that? Do you think those going to school don't steal, take or sell drugs, or get into trouble? Use some logic. Another thought for you to ponder: Why would anybody, if given another choice, would ever in their right mind choose to attend a "college" that has such a shady academic standing in the eyes of this state? Deciding to attend Concordia would make me think he or she wants something for nothing. And generally they are right. That is why they choose to go there! i You think Concordia ever turns anybody away for any reason? Your thought process tells you "that if I don't recognize a fact to be a fact, it will disappear. " You remind me of a young child who believes if he puts his hands over his eyes, whatever he is looking at goes away. You are a prime example of why Sema will never be more than it is today. The majority of Selmanites think everything is just fine. How sad. How ignorant. How dilusional.

Can one of you pull that past article on the Concordia students involvement with the robbery/shooting months back? There for a while it looked like Concordia was teaching classes on crime. Just like the old saying, "Ignorance is Bliss". I guess when more people in this town ignore the major factors such as crime, youth crime, drop out rates, murders, robbery, etc....and refocus their attention to miniscule, racial excuses for everything....then their backward priorities allow for this group to be "victims of their own cicumstance".

And speaking of being an idiot...Pelosi is trying to block the "Healthcare Bill" from being posted on the internet for American Citizens to read IN DETAIL.
