Jemison stops Hornets

Published Saturday, October 3, 2009

PLANTERSVILLE — Dallas County coach Darryl Burns wants to take two plays away from Friday night’s 21-6 loss to Class 4A District 3 opponent Jemison.

“We had a couple of breakdowns tonight, and that’s going to happen,” Burns said. “We were gambling a little bit.”

Fro the most part the gamble paid off, especially on defense.

Except for two plays.’

The Hornets had taken an 6-0 lead after the first possession of the game. Senior quarterback Justin McAfee lofted a pass to junior wide receiver DeAndre McIntyre, who grabbed the ball and outran the defenders for a 65-yard scoring play less than 1:30 into the game.

The PAT kick failed at 10:35 to go in the first quarter.

The Panthers tried to return the favor after Cole Thompson blocked a fourth-down DCHS punt and Jemison took over at the Dallas County 25. Five plays later, the Hornets held the Panthers out of the end zone at the 1 to take over the ball.

In the second quarter, Jemison speedster sophomore Javae Swindle went 68 yards down the right sideline to the 2-yard line. Isa Bentley went the last two yards and Jemison went on top 7-6.

After Dallas County was intercepted on the first play after the touchdown, Jemison strung together 11 plays with three major penalties for its second score. Swindle got the last 17 yards for a 13-6 Panthers halftime margin.

The Hornets’ second breakdown came on the first possession of the third quarter when Jemison quarterback Scott Clements hit Swindle on an 80-yard scoring pass less than a minute into the second half.

The final points left Jemison with the 21-6 victory.

The Panthers came knocking again in the third quarter, but Dallas County’s defense held on fourth-and-inches at the Hornets 25.

The DCHS defense again got the ball over on down in the fourth quarter, but three pass incompletions stalled the scoring chances.

Despite the short breakdowns, Burns said he was pleased with his squad’s play.

“I’m proud of all of them,” he said. “As long as we stay healthy, we’ll be good.”

Jemison coach Brad Abbott said the victory was important for the Panthers.

“We have been good on offense all year,” he said.

“In the fourth quarter, we haven’t been able to put it away. So this was a big win for our confidence tonight.”
