President should set better example for nation’s youth

Published Friday, November 6, 2009

Dear Mr. President:

With all due respect, as a minister of the Gospel, I find it very hard to believe you meant what you said recently. When you closed your address to the nation you said, “God Bless America.” I formed this opinion by gathering facts. Your stand on abortion and gay rights seems to be a complete contradiction from what I read in my Bible. Your lack of support for the National Day of Prayer and your attendance of worship services also leads me to think that your relationship with God in merely political.

The latest anti-Christian move was to hold a Beer Party in the White House Garden. Perhaps you were unaware that the American Medical Association and the Center for Disease Control point out that alcohol is a drug!!! Alcohol is a deadly drug that results in 100,000 plus deaths in the U.S. each year and is listed as the fourth leading cause of death among persons ages 10-24. Beer is listed as the alcoholic beverage of choice by this same group, which annually consumes over one billion cans each year in the junior and senior high school age group alone. 33 percent of all preventable deaths is the U.S. are directly caused by alcohol.

During your Presidential campaign you seemed sharp, witty and very well informed. Therefore I find it hard to believe that you did not realize the costly mistake that you made. Not only did you give beer companies free advertising during prime time news each night. You gave the impression that when problems arise you can solve them with a few cans of beer. A White House Beer Summit or as I view it the beer party does not solve any problems. Alcohol only intensifies and makes bad situations worse. I too was a police officer and never once saw alcohol make a change for the better. The times that I stood before a parent in the wee hours of the morning to say your son or daughter has been killed in an accident as the result of their or another persons excessive use of alcohol reminds me of that fact. Alcohol only makes things worse. How offended with this nation have been if the news read “President throws cocaine party on White House lawn.” Basically that is what happened, but you chose a different deadly drug.

I think you showed bad judgment and sent a wrong message to our nation especially our underage group.

Dr. Ed Eaton

Pastor, Westwood Baptist Church

Mr. Minister. Lol. Its amazing how people are gonna find everything they can wrong with President Barack Obama and his wife. Last I checked, the president was way older than 21 years of age.. America or should I say, its citizens, are becoming quite petty with all of this "finding" everything wrong with the new president. Give the man a chance. I bet you find something wrong with his name being Barack lol.. WOW....

The comments you made are not good reasons to say that the president is not setting good examples for the nations youth. How could you blame him for all the nations problem because he drank some beer. Alcohol may be a drug but it was legalized long before Obama became President. People have drank since the beginning of time and they are going to continue to drink even after Obama. He may not attend church but at least he is a christian,Bush was an athiest before he became the Presisdent but because you had to belong to a church to run for the President of the United States he went and join one. I didn't see any comments made about that. I can't understand why people want give this man a chance. Those are the weakest excuses you could find to criticize the President. We have had 43 Presidents prior to him and they did nothing. If they had we would not have the problems we are having today. So in my opininon he can't do any worse than they did. You are blaming him because someone else got drunk and killed someone and you are blaming him because some underage child decided to drink that makes no sense. You say that you are a man of God but you sure can't tell by what you wrote here today. this country was in upheavel before we ever even heard of Obama. Talk about Bush and how he left this country. Obama seems to be a good man and he deserves a chance just like all the others were given. It is not his fault that bad things happen in our nation, all he can do is do his best to fix the problems that was already there.

Antnee09 and Bwoods82, both of you need to re-read what was written. Dr. Eaton did not accuse the President of killing people, or blame him for other people getting drunk and killing someone, he was stating facts and he said it was a bad idea to go national with it on television. Our children are seeing enough bad stuff as is, we don't need the President saying it's good to have a beer party to settle the matter at hand.
bwoods82, where did you get your info that former President Bush was an athiest?
Please don't let your emotions talk when you write, know the facts. Did President Obama not say he followed the Muslam way, and not the Christion way? I think I can find that in his writings.

Whether or not Obama's "beer summit" was a negative example for the country's youth is subject to debate. In my opinion that whole episode was rather silly, but it seems to me examples for our children should be set at home and not in Washington DC.tom01,can you tell me where to find these writings that says the President allegedly follows the Muslim "way"?

Thank You Leo71, I agree. The whole episode was silly, but it lies at home to teach your kids about alcohol. Honestly, I dont see where them having beer condoned or promoted the use of alcohol, especially when all of them were grown men. And last lol.. people are so bent on saying Obama is a terrorist or he follows the Muslim faith because his name is Obama lol..... Folks he is president..now get over it already lol...... And Pastor as long as you are teaching the youth of your church the errors of alcohol then you have nothing to worry about.

He who is without sin cast the first stone. It is a shame when we see Pastors casting the first stone instead of praying for those in authority over us. I wonder, do you drink alcohol and where in the bible does it say drinking is a sin. Don't worry, I don't drink, but I also know it is not a sin. We need to pray for all elected officials, especially the President. And before we cast judgement on who is or is not a Christian, Jesus said many will claim to be Christians in the last days, but He will say depart for me I never knew you.

When more abortions occurred under George W. Bush's administration than Bill Clinton's due to harsh economic times, should we blame Bush for enacting policies that were hard on the poor thus creating more abortions.
Did we condemn former Vice President Dick Cheney when he told a U.S. Senator to go F yourself on the Senate floor.

Or did we condemn George W. Bush for being a former Alcoholic and for starting the Iraq War that has killed over 3,000 americans in battle, killed over one hundred thousand Iraq's and has wounded over 20,000 american soldiers, all of this to avenge the death of 3,000 Americans. When does the madness end.

Because Obama recognizes the rights of all Americans, he should not automatically be considered unchristian. So I appreciate our President's words asking God to Bless America, because I don't know about you, but I think we need all the prayers and blessings we can get.

On the day of this writing, the pastor was an instrument of satan.
