3 Orrville teens jailed for robbery
Published Wednesday, May 27, 2009
Robbery is never a good idea, especially if 100 extra out-of-town officers are in the city for the Law Enforcement Training Conference.
Police officers arrested three 18-year-old Orrville residents — Raphael Clark, Jory Leshore and Devin L. Hatcher — Tuesday night and charged them with two counts of robbery in the first degree.
“Last night after the law enforcement conference we are holding in Selma, an officer was entertaining some out-of-town officers,” Lt. David Evans said Wednesday. “He was going home at 10:15 p.m. and stopped at a local convenience store to purchase gas. I will not identify the officer because he works with the drug unit.”
The officer drove up to a local gas station in the 200 block of Highland Avenue and saw a robbery in progress. The narcotics officer did exactly as he was supposed to do.
“Instead of trying to take dangerous actions, which could create a hostage situation, he held back, observed and called for backup,” Evans said. “Backup arrived shortly. [The narcotics officer] had followed the subjects when they left. A traffic stop was initiated and that lead to the arrest of the three robbery subjects and the recovery of the weapon and the cash involved in the robbery.”
Officers would not release the amount of the money seized, but said the weapon was a handgun.
The narcotics officer returned to the conference Wednesday morning and was applauded for his work.
“He did exactly as he was trained in what had to be a very high stress situation,” Evans said. “We are proud of the officer. He was recognized for his efforts at the conference [Wednesday] morning.”
The other robbery charge for the suspects comes from an April 29 robbery of a convenience store near Alabama Highway 5 and County Road 66 in Safford.
The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department interviewed the three suspects Wednesday morning following the arrest Tuesday.
“We charged the suspects for the robbery of [a Safford gas station],” Chief Deputy Randy Pugh said. “Sgt. Mike Granthum interviewed the suspects this morning and they admitted to the robbery.”
The suspects allegedly took an undetermined amount of money from a clerk at 8 p.m.
Under the Code of Alabama, robbery in the first degree is a class-a felony. If convicted the three suspects can face 20 years to life in prison and a fine up to $60,000.
Officers placed the three suspects in the Dallas County Jail under two $60,000 bonds each.

Hahahahahahah. What a bunch of idiots. I swear, everyday there is something in this paper about someone getting shot, killed, robbed, beat up, etc. It's amazing how the court system in Selma even keeps up with all these thugs.

This shows what a few more law enforcement officers in town can do to stop crime. We hope our guests can enjoy the other sites that we have instead of the real life training they are getting here. Thanks for your contributions while you are in Selma!!!!

At one time or another we all have had low points in our life. But we didn’t go out and stick up someone

And by the way, how bright can one be; to stick up some place when your city is hosting a law enforcement conference?

Sadddddddd situation. That is all one can say. Some parents can do all that they can to raise their children to be productive citizens, but it is up to them once they become adults to choose the right path to follow. Young people you must wake up and stop laying such heavy burdens on the hearts of your parents and families.

I wonder if they really needed the money or if we were already giving it them via OUR TAX DOLLARS! Why get a job when everyone with a job helps you get government checks you never deserved?

Yeah, disgruntled..
They are taught, if they act stupid and not past tests in school at a young age, they can get a disability check, and guess where the money comes from??
You got it OUR tax dollars!!

FOR DEVIN IT'S NOT ABOUT HIS CHILDHOOD. HE'S HAD A GOOD LIFE! HIS MOTHER AND GRANDMOTHER ARE GREAT PEOPLE. SOMETIMES IT'S JUST BAD DECISIONS THAT THE TEENS MAKE. THIS ONE WAS TOTALLY BAD!! CLOTHES, FOOD, AND SHOES DON'T MAKE A PERSON!! IGNORANT COMMENTS(JUST LIKE THIS ROBBERY) SHOULDN'T BE CONSIDERED!!
Posted by bamafan (anonymous) on June 3, 2009 at 5:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Isn't it ALWAYS????
I did not read one ignorant comment on here, keepnitreal, except yours...
Why wouldn't this robbery be considered? It is against the law.
Listen to the news, 75% of acts of crime, the criminals try to get off of it because "they had a bad childhood", that's no excuse, you are suppose to become a better person, not lower yourself.
I hate it for his mother and grandmother, but I do hope he gets what he deserves, maybe he will learn his lesson.
