Deputies arrest 2 for receiving stolen property

Published Tuesday, June 30, 2009

A couple of residents in the Plantersville area noticed something wasn’t right when they saw a few young men unloading a four-wheeler.

The problem was the four-wheeler didn’t belong to guys.

Deputies arrested Ivery Bennet, 25, and Keashon Gordon, 32, and charged them each with receiving stolen property first-degree Monday.

“On [Thursday] there was a reported theft of a Honda four-wheeler TRX-450 in the Plantersville area,” Sgt. John Hatfield said. “Two eyewitnesses saw the individuals unloading the four-wheeler.”

Hatfield had the two eyewitnesses, who were not identified, pick the suspects out of a photo lineup.

Bennett was arrested first. He was interviewed by investigators and according to authorities he admitted to taking the four-wheeler.

Gordon was arrested a few hours later. Investigators attempted to interview him, but he did not want to speak.

“When we arrested Keashon Gordon, we found out he was on state probation from Walker County,” Hatfield said. “He had a state probation warrant out for him as well.”

Officers booked Bennett and Gordon into the Dallas County Jail under $30,000 bond each. Gordon has a hold for court so if he made bond he would not be released until he appeared before a judge.

The Code of Alabama classifies receiving stolen property in the first degree when a person “intentionally receives, retains or disposes of stolen property knowing that it has been stolen or having reasonable grounds to believe it has been stolen, unless the property is received, retained or disposed of with intent to restore it to the owner” and the value of the stolen property is more than $2,500.

The offense is a class-b felony. If convicted, then Bennett and Gordon could face imprisonment from two years to 20 years and pay a fine up to $30,000.

“We want to thank the eyewitnesses’ support in helping capture the two suspects,” Hatfield said. “It makes our job a lot easier when people help.”
