Givan asks super to resign

Published Monday, June 29, 2009

What began as another special called Selma City School Board meeting to discuss personnel transfers in a closed-door session turned into a discussion on whether the superintendent was called to resigned.

After the executive session gave way to the open meeting Monday to vote on personnel moves, board member Barbara Stapp-Hiouas asked permission to pose a question.

“I had two voicemails today that frankly I didn’t understand,” she said. “Dr. Obasohan, did Mr. [Ben] Givhan ask you to resign?”

The room, which was subdued, buzzed with activity.

Selma City Schools Superintendent Dr. Austin Obasohan said Selma City Schools Board of Education president came to him Monday morning and asked him to resign.

Givhan said he acted as a person and not for the board, which had not been completely notified of the request.

“I said to [Obasohan] due to the coverage we are getting would you consider resigning,” he said. “I never said the board wanted you to resign or anything like that, but due to the publicity I asked for you to consider resigning,” Givan said.

The meeting topic moved to whether Obasohan had passed state qualification tests in order to be a superintendent, which he has passed the tests.

Givan also addressed that Obasohan allegedly came to him two months prior asking for a buyout, but Obasohan said that it was under pressure from some board members.

“I’m going to put this all out on the table,” Obasohan said. “I’m tired of the politics. When I was hired, I knew I had to pass a Praxis, which you have to do whenever you move to another state. Before I even had time to take the test, my mother in Nigeria called me because she had seen on the Internet a rumor that I failed. Already there were people trying to get me to resign, but I said I would not resign. However if it were the consensus of the board I would take a buyout. I was not hired to fight for the adults. I was hired to fight for the children.”

Some board members present jumped to action saying they had not been contacted or they did not feel it was right for Givan to personally ask Obasohan for his resignation.

“No one person speaks for the board,” the Rev. Coley Chestnut said. “I want to put to rest tonight that the board has no intention to get rid of Dr. Obasohan as long as I’m on it. We don’t need to confuse a problem with a person. There were problems here before Dr. Obasohan came.”

Dr. Udo Ufomadu said since Givan is the school board president it gave the appearance that he was speaking for the entire board and not person-to-person. He also said he was “shocked” by hearing about the request and that the board should always act as one body.

Givhan agreed that the board should be united.

“No one is bigger than the school board,” Givan said. “I would never speak on behalf of the board. I want to succeed. There will be times I vote against [Obasohan’s] recommendations, but he will just have to live with that.”

After the meeting, Obasohan said he hoped this was not the last opportunity he has to speak to the community.

“I was brought in here to do two things and I am doing them," he said. "I love my job. You can ask my family and they will tell you. When I make decisions, I don’t want to be left by myself. My salvation is worth more to me than my salary.”

hang in there Dr. O and bring on the elections for the school board. As Colee Chestnut said this board has been having problems for some time.

Dr. Obasohan, keep up the good work and stand up for righteousness! Don't cower down. You have more employee and community support than you realize. We commend those board members who have a backbone and have stood up tonight for what is right for our children. As a parent, I believe that Dr. Obasohan will make our District better and my child will now be prepared to compete!

Keep fighting for the children. If the school board truly wants what is best for the children of Selma, they will work with you and not against you!

Board president Givan was way out of line and the rest of the board needs to remind him of that and they need to keep a close check on his activities. The board is not there to run the system, only to set policy and act on the superintendents recommendations!

Posted by on_da_move (anonymous) on June 29, 2009 at 11:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Whoa!!!! I think Mr. Givan need to retire from everything, go home and enjoy his life. Selma need change and with old heads like him still stuck in his way, Selma City Schools with never move forward unless you have people who are willing to reform the whole school system. Politics should not be played with kids education!!!! Our kids are already behind with Technology. I think the school board need to be done away with, let the Superintendent do his job!!! Dr Obasohan fight for what is RIGHT!!

I guess I just don't get it, but shouldn't the head of the city school system be both able and required to use correct grammar including subject and verb agreement? Maybe that's just an old outdated notion.

Does anyone really have any confidence in either this Board or its superintendent? Buffoons all. Sayitaintso.

Looks like the board is trying to railroad Dr. Obasohan like they did Dr. Carter. GO HOME GIVAN!!!

Shades of Bobby Lowder! It appears that Mr. Givan needs to resign rather than Dr. O.

Perhaps, at the election, the citizens who want to move this town forward will retire Mr. G at the polls.

It ain't so, Sayitaintso.

Dr. O is no buffoon. I would attribute the word "tire" to either being a typo or his accent. He speaks the King's English with impeccability and I have never heard him use the word "ain't."

Looks as if Hiouas is not just vowels, but a major trouble maker. Needhams taught her well. Don't know why what was suppose to have gone to Executive Session wasn't resolved there. Its looks like all we see in the the news from Birmingham, Montgomery, and Selma is the hiring and firing of Superintendants. An elected school board in Selma isn't the answer, but leadership on this Board is.

"Already there was people trying to get me to resign...." How impeccable is that? Sayitaintso.

"Sayitaintso" let's not examine grammar usage with those split infinitives and that run-on sentence from your post. "Buffoons all" is not actually a formal sentence. However, it could have served as an "exceptional" interjection if the sentence was expanded. In addition, I can assure you that about 95% of leaders around the country has made a mistake in impromptu spoken word. Furthermore, the Selma Times Journal always has typing errors in their articles but I don't criticize their journalism skills. Have a great day!

Dr O, you have people that appreciate what you do, what you have done, and what you will do in the future!

There is no way that a buy out is feasible, we do not have the finances to support such an illogical, unauthorized request! The Selma City School system has been through 3 superintendents in 3 years! That shows total lack of judgement and a flawed ability to lead!

Its time to get those backward thinking individuals who feel selling out our children is the answer off of the board! The board spent too much money in the selection process to hire Dr. O, and as a parent of a student in this system enough is enough!

Board members asked Dr. O to make changes and when he acts on their request they throw him under the yellow bus.

Dr. O is progressive and innovative which is truly needed at this crucial moment in our school system! Dr. O you keep fighting for our children and aware parents will keep fighting for you!

Parents don't let a few sour board members ruin a already hurting school system!

Thankful for all that you do Dr. O! Kimesha 'Sunshine' Alvarado supports you fully!

If this was a "racial issue", every parent and student in Selma would be up at the School Board protesting this issue. But since it's not, again we have people complaining...and doing nothing about it. You get back what you put into it.

they hired a man to do a job and they will not let him do it. The city schools need big changes and the board needs to back out of it. The board is the reason the schools are in such horrible shape and the dropout rate is so high.

Sayitaintso, instead of looking at substances (Dr. O's vision, passion, and determination for a better future for our kids and system), you invest your energy on the insignificant. How many foreign languages can you speak besides English which is your first language? I would like to see how good you are speaking other languages besides your first language.

Dr.O is an intelligent man, a go-getter, a fast thinker, quick in giving the right responses to questions, always prepared, inclusive, he sees and thinks beyond the surface and the ordinary. He is a man with a plan to move this system to a greater height if the "mighty men and women" in Selma will let him. We are ready to rally around him so he is not driven out by few Selmanians who give bad names to the rest of us.

"I can assure you that 95% of leaders around the country has made a mistake...." Really HuntsvilleGamer. Repeat after me. Subject - verb. Subject - verb. I do see why you choose not to criticize the STJ. Oh, one other thing. I don't have a PhD and I'm not the superintendant of a school system. Sayitaintso.

Savetheplanet. I speak only one language, and I write that language. However I try to do it correctly. I would hardly call expecting the superintendent of a school system to have mastered simple subject verb agreement to be an insignificant expectation. Sayitaintso.

I'm trying to understand what the difference is between Givhan asking Obasohan to resign "personally" or "as a board member"? So what he's saying is he tends to make decisions differently from a personal level versus as a board member? That is stupid. Who the hell is he benefiting here...himself or the students and school? Are they paying him to make decision that will benefit him personally or to go and do a job that requires making decisions that better students, the school system and education?

I'm sorry, this is just another ignorant scenario that keeps Selma embarrassed and in the ditch. You go and hire these people in leader roles, then you don't stand behind them. Then you wonder why your school system is in shambles. hahaha Genius.

Catchem, I refuse to see Madam Hiouas as a trouble maker. I am glad she brought this issue out in the open, publicly exposing what few board members do in private. When she was president of the board, the system had a direction. In the matters of the system and leading the board, she was strong and efficient unlike the new President who is unstable in his ways.

In an attempt to be a "hero" to the whiners and retain his seat in the up coming election, connives with a few board members to upset every good decision and effort of the other board members and the superintendent.

If Mr. Givan and a few board members think this type of attitude is going to earn them seats on the board in the coming election, it's not going to happen.

I just don't know where to start. This is a mess! Dr. Obasohan, keep your head up!!! Mr. Givan, what kind of a man are you? How can one man look another in the eye and ask him to resign from a job? This man has a wife and three children. You (school board) up rooted this man from his home and now look how your treating him. I think what he is doing is good for our children. If we (parents) keep allowing politics to play a part in our system....I just hate to think of what will happen to our children. I have a granddaughter who will soon be attending public schools and I'm hoping by then the Board will have their stuff together.

Dr. O, I am a christian and I believe in alter prayer. From now on when I go to the alter I'm going to say a special prayer for you. Mr. Givan, I'm going to pray for you too cause you need it.

Rolltidegirl, enlighten us on the situation at central office. How many board meetings do you attend? How would you know so much about central office?

Posted by eyeonyou (anonymous) on June 30, 2009 at 10:45 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Hey rolltidegirl, why would anybody have to attend a meeting to understand what is going on? What "facts" are being left out? The story has direct quotes from each individual responsible for this mess. Since everyone on this blog is so wrong and under assumptions, why don't you elighten us all with your knowlege on this topic since you are vastly aware.

With the lack of parental involvment at these meetings, can we assume that all these students and parents have no clue to what's going on then? You might want to enlighten them then since it effects them in the end.

What I am stating here is my observation and my viewpoint of Dr. Obasohan.

Dr. Obasohan is a good leader. He has brought collaboration to the Selma City School system. (Collaboration is the preferred method of decision making that is presently taught to all administrators. Collaboration takes effort because it requires more time and people than authoritarian leadership) In using this method as input for his decision making he has made decisions that are not always politically accepted by some individuals. These individuals in turn put pressure on our board. His teams/committees addressing issues represent all of Selma. He has students, teachers, parents, principals, central office staff and others on the teams. They discuss and reach concensus. The issues are comprehensive and hve included mission of the system, staffing, infrastructure, curriculum, and more. He listens. He is doing what he thinks is right in his heart for the students.

I am deeply saddened that Selma City Schools does not have even the appearance of unity on the school board. These are the people who set the tone for the rest of the system.

School boards like the one in Montgomery and here never let the person they hire make any real changes, they tie their hands as much as possible. I think its because they don't want the 'hired help' to get the credit for making the changes, otherwise we might see that we don't really need a board as much as we thought we did.

Posted by eyeonyou (anonymous) on June 30, 2009 at 1:29 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Yeah, and the school board in Montgomery is also politically controlled and influenced from the likes of people such as Alvin Holmes. One of Montgomery's biggest race baiting, race card playing, no good politicans around. The guy is a total embarrassment to Montgomery and it's citizens. Their last black female candidate from South Carolina just pulled her name from the candidate list due to all the excessive drama, incompetence and flim flam. Mr. Holmes can pat himself on the back for most of this.

Posted by sharon (anonymous) on June 30, 2009 at 2:15 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't think that Alvin Holmes has as much power as he thinks he has, he is more of a symbol of a time gone by. He really does have the community's best interest in mind when he speaks, he is just stuck in another era. Tommy Miller, however, was the thorn for a long time but he was not re-elected. The problem is you don't always know who really wants to serve and who wants to be served.

Posted by eyeonyou (anonymous) on June 30, 2009 at 2:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Alvin Holmes is a lot like a couple washed up ex-politician types here in Selma. They end up cutting their nose off to spite their face in the long run. If they would put as much effort into doing good as they do making excuses and living by the race card, they might get some positive, progressive results.

But when everything is laced with a direct racial overtone every single time they open their mouth, the value of it goes out the window. You can't cry wolf but so many times before people just start ignoring every word you say. It's a good thing people like Holmes lives in the South where people pander to this race hustling, otherwise, he would be out of a job.

Maybe each school board should contain two parents, with kids in the system, they could apply for the board like a job and get paid a stipend. I mean really have to qualify and....... (thinking about it) Nevermind, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely" ...... They'd be demanding teachers change grades and things like that. Maybe we just need to remind them that the vote put them in and that we are watching.

“Sayitaintso” have you ever considered becoming Selma's superintendent of Selma? I think your services are definitely needed. I saw the mistake on my part and did not make a correction to solidify my point. A man or woman making a mistake concerning grammar does not discredit him or her. I have this book titled "Great Speeches" and it is a rest haven for some of your pet peeves. What are your real reasons for disliking the guy? I left Selma after high school and never moved back after college. You seem like a credible source. Fill me in on the state of education in Selma. (I'm being serious.) Quiet honestly, I hardly ever hear anything good about the teachers in Selma. Why? I was also told that quite a few of them have yet to fulfill their certification requirements due to failing the Praxis. The Praxis was a tough test for me but I passed with flying colors.

Posted by HuntsvilleGamer (anonymous) on June 30, 2009 at 7:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I hear a lot about Selma. Seems the root of every problem there is power and money. Race is, of course, still an issue. However, I feel like it is still an issue by choice and not force. Honestly, I feel like black people have done their share of keeping racism in existence. (Pause! I am a black man before anyone starts to rip a white person without cause.)

I feel like my own people should stop feeling as if someone owes them something just because slavery and segregation existed. Why are people still pointing fingers? For example, a black person gets pissed if a white person associates them with kool-aid and fried chicken. On the other hand, blacks taunt whites about not knowing how to dance or reacting outrageously to something in a scary movie. Call those comparisons minor, but they are true.

These are just my opinions and I feel as though I have the right to express myself. I know there will be several disagreements.

I work in education. I am going to touch on a few things that may seem controversial. I have been in predominantly black areas as well as white. I am fortunate enough to be in a very diverse area currently. In terms of discipline, there are more problems with the black kids than the white. In terms of excuses being made, there have been more problems with the black kids versus white. In terms of following directions, there have been more problems with the black kids versus white.

There is a lack of parental support in the black home in comparison to the white home.

I am basing my claims off my own experiences. My opinions do not set the standard for comparing cultures.
In terms of politics, I think all members of their respective parties have the right to feel a certain way about policies. However, I am a voting democrat and I stand behind it in times of good or bad. I eat lunch with members of opposing political parties all the time. We all share different opinions however, we do not allow our affiliations to divide us socially.
Selma needs help from just about anyone that is willing to contribute. Why even concern ourselves with race? It is not even a race! We are all running away from the problems instead of trying to make it to the finish line of economic prosperity, superior education, and social equality. I placed them in that order because the economy needs to be the main concern. How can you make a city and its citizens better without money? If the economy makes progress, then resources will become available for superior educational programs. With a booming economy and superior education, the citizens of Selma can work together to promote social equality.
I love Dallas County and appreciate everything it did for me. Selma has some of the nicest people one can ever meet. I hate that the city is going through so much trauma. I have dreams of becoming wealthy (not rich). If that dream comes true, it will be in my heart to do whatever I can to help the city of Selma.

Huntsvillegamer, I agree with your outlook on the issue at hand. It is unfortunate that slavery and segregation did happen. However, that is past now and trying to keep it alive is causing barrier to our future breakthrough. Nothing good happens when we are resentful, build fences around ourselves and become territorial. We should be smart to use history to shape our future according to President Obama.

Segregating public school in Selma has done more harm than good. In integrated schools, the problems you just mentioned that are rampant among black students tend to improve. The reason is that students like challenges and they like to compete and as a result, they excel academically and in discipline. Black and White students should not be kept apart. I truly believe they can challenge one another academically, and in disciline and help bring the best out of themselves. There is always something they can benefit from one another.

The Dallas County Schools are integrated and I see no reason why the city schools cannot be. The difference is that a the majority of the city is allowing a radical few to controll the situation. We harm our children by keeping them segregated. With the grace of God students will some day be academically prepared enough to venture out into other parts of the country and world. To be successful they must be able to understand and work with others. We handicap them by not allowing them to play with each other and learn side by side. This community must stop cutting its nose off to spite its face. Dr. King dreamed of a world in which all our children might one day walk hand in hand. What disrespect we show by not continuing to work towards his dream.

I would like to make a statement to "catchem". Whoever you are you have a wrong impression of me. I won't hide behind a fictious name here. I am Barbara Hiouas. Although I may be kin to George Needham, he has no influence upon me at all. He and his wife did not want me to run for the school board back in 2006. They don't want me there now.
Nothing I say or do has anything at all to do with them.

I did not stir up trouble by asking Dr. O if Mr. G had asked him to resign. I had gotten two phone calls asking me if it were true. I didn't know whether it was or not, so to determine if it were true that Mr. G. had asked Dr. O to resign, I asked in our meeting. The venue was proper, and the question was posed in a polite manner with no intention of making trouble. As a board member I should have done just what I did. Please explain why you think that was creating trouble? Also, please, please, never associate me with anything the Needhams do or say.

Saharawinds, I agree with you 100%. What you did was not stirring up trouble, it should have been put on the table because it was a rediculious act on Mr. G's behalf. Dr. O was a good choice. I just hate that the board is giving him such a hard time. Since I know who you are......can you answer one question. Isn't it the boards job to enforce rules and regulations and not micro manage the super? Please shed some light on what the role of the board is. Why is it that the board agress with some recommendations of the super but don't stand behind him? Ex: The mess with the central office employees.

Selma is at a cross road in its development. It can continue on the path to educational excellence or it can revert back to the path of mis-education and substandard education. Parents for years have advocated for quality in our public school system, but the cry has fallen on deaf ears. Board President, Mr. Givans was WRONG. There is no other way to say it.
Many of the problems in Selma have come from individuals or small undercover groups making self serving bad decisions that affect the community as a whole. While there are some actions of Mrs. Hiouas that I do not support, I do applaud her for publicly asking this question. Most would have kept the resignation request silent... (Go along to get along).
If Selma is to move forward it need consistency in leadership, a plan of action that is progressive and visionary, and people willing to publicly take a stand for the children and citizens of Selma. The few people in Selma that have controlled the direction of the growth of the city have done us all a disservice, and if we allow this to continue we have no one to blame but ourselves. For each person that is on this blog and have a true interest in seeing Selma progress, let’s make a commitment to be at the next school board meeting. Let’s take a stand for high quality education in Selma. It is not necessary to be vocal, only visible. This group has a history of not caring who is in attendance, but I feel the tide is beginning to change in Selma. The strongholds are finally coming down.

Sarahwinds had a responsibility to the community to ask the question!

Mr Givan was out of line for the request and also out of line in asking Dr O to forget he even asked for his resignation.

You cannot bully your way to control! I am happy that Dr O didn't succumb to the ill fear tactics used by Mr Givan!

Sarahwinds might have used bad judgment in the past, but she absolutely did the right thing during that meeting! Thank you Ms Hiaous for taken the road less traveled in this issue! Letting the community know when you have concerns is commendable!

Let's put all of the cards on the table. Mr. Givan did not operate alone in his request. There is another who seeks to destroy Dr. O and the district when she can't have her way! On the airways, she speaks as though she has the interest of the children and the district but she is actually distorting the truth and being self servant. Mr. Givan acted, but the other spawned the idea. Mr. Givan should not take the whipping alone when in actuality he is not acting alone. Uncloak your eyes, Selma. Stand up and seek revelation and truth.

teachme, haven't you heard "YOU CAN'T TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS". Stop hating on people and learn to appreciate them. The blame game can't hurt people who are in God's favor. IT CAN ONLY HURT COWARDS LIKE YOU!

PEACE.........

Freeselma, You are really determined to see this man fail, because you could not micromanage him to keep those you "like" and uproot those not in your "good book". What is wrong with him setting up a democratic process to fairly select the qualified?

I don't believe in hiding behind made up names to deform people's characters. If there is any truth in your accusation, be bold enough to identify yourself to those who don't know who you really are, because I do. I challenge you & Dr.O to have a face to face forum discussion.

Freeselma, the truth is, you think you are the alpha & omega. If it's not those you think are "good" you will go to any length to destroy the process and/or the person. It's not all about you. I am sure Dr.O has met with you without the other ten board members present. What is wrong with qualified candidates, not associated with you getting a job? It is not unheard of for employees to contest non-renewal of contracts and transfer. These hearings are all public information. We all know about them, and the dangerous part you played in the whole process.

Freeselma, too many good people are already praying for him, so keep your prayers to yourself, because I believe you really need it. The good people are praying for him to succeed, but your prayer is to see him fail. Another tip, it is about time you change your name from "freeselma" because you have held Selma's progress back for far too long with inaccurate information.
Finally, the academic community has confidence in those candidates that were selected so get over it and take part in the system's vision.
