Deputies arrest Maplesville man for theft

Published Friday, June 26, 2009

A photo lineup proved to be the clincher for a theft that occurred in Valley Grande.

Deputies obtained a warrant for Jeffery Smitherman, 42, and charged him with theft of property second-degree. He turned himself in to the Dallas County Jail Friday.

“A resident of a home on County Road 83 in Valley Grande reported that a battery charger for a car, a weed eater, a leaf blower and chainsaw were stolen,” Sgt. John Hatfield said. “Investigators talked to a local pawnshop owner, who was very helpful. The owner said the items came through the store.”

The owner helped identify the Smitherman in a photo lineup.

When Smitherman turned himself in to the jail, he was placed under a $15,000 bond. He had not made bond at press time.

The Code of Alabama defines theft of property in the second degree as taking property that “exceeds $500 in value but does not exceed $2,500 in value.”

The crime is a class-c felony. If Smitherman is convicted, he could face imprisonment between one year and a day to 10 years in prison and pay a fine up to $15,000.
