Police search for suspect in Tuesday shooting
Published Thursday, June 25, 2009
One suspect in the Tuesday shooting on Royal Street still sits in jail, while the other suspect is on the run from police.
Officers are searching for Roderick Hunter, 21, as the second suspect for first-degree assault in the incident.
“Detectives have reason to believe that Mr. Hunter is connected with the shooting,” Selma Police Department Lt. David Evans said. “Right now detectives and officers are searching for him.”
Officers arrested Curtis Mitchell Jr., 20, and charged him with assault first degree in the shooting of a 23-year-old man. The arrest came just two hours after the shooting.
“[Mitchell] was at the scene and participated in the scene, but we are not releasing the details at this time,” Evans said.
“The victim and the suspects were involved in a confrontation that night,” Evans said. “The victim was on one side of the argument and the suspects were on the other side. We don’t know what the fight was about.”
Authorities said the suspect left the scene of the argument and then came back. He shot the victim multiple times and then left the scene again. Police are not releasing details of the assault at this time, which is typical when a suspect is at large.
They have not identified the victim, but said he is a male who lives in the 2000 block of Royal Street, which is where the shooting occurred.
The Code of Alabama defines assault in the first-degree as a person who “causes serious physical injury to another person, he causes serious physical injury to any person by means of a deadly weapon or a dangerous instrument.”
Mitchell is still in the Dallas County jail under a $60,000 bond. Hunter stands 5 feet and 10 inches and weighs 160 pounds.
If anyone has information on the whereabouts of Hunter, authorities ask you to call the police department at 874-6611 or the Secret Witness Line at 874-2190 or Crime Stoppers at 877-3530.
