Charges brought against teen

Published Tuesday, June 23, 2009

Justin Collins

A teenager injured in a wreck on Friday now has more on his mind than the small fracture in his foot that he suffered as an injury from the accident.

Deputies arrested Justin Collins, 18, and charged him with two counts of burglary in the third degree and one count of failure to appear.

“The failure to appear charges comes because Justin Collins walked off from a drug rehab facility,” Chief Deputy Randy Pugh said. “He was ordered by the district court to go to the facility, but he did not stay there for the time he was sentenced.”

Authorities said both burglaries occurred on Thursday, just a day before the wreck on County Road 81 and Alabama Highway 22.

Collins is suspected of breaking into one residence in the Marion Junction area and another in Okmulgee.

“There could be additional charges added on at another time,” Pugh said. “Justin did admit to several other burglaries in the city. We are getting ready to turn him over to police so they can question him about the other cases.”

Detectives from the Selma Police Department came to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office at 3 p.m. to pick up Collins.

Authorities said the burglaries in the city occurred over the last two weeks.

The property stolen from the homes, which authorities suspect Collins broke into, ranges from firearms to jewelry. Coins and electronics were also taken from homes burglarized.

Deputies placed Collins in the Dallas County Jail with no bond because of the failure to appear charge. Collins is expected to go before a judge Wednesday.

Burglary in the third degree is a class-c felony. If Collins is convicted of one count, then he could spend one year and a day to 10 years in prison and pay a fine up to $15,000.

Collins was involved in a wreck Friday morning with Wesley Stone, 19.

“The initial report is that the white 1997 Nissan Altima was traveling north on County Road 81,” Alabama State Trooper John Reese said. “When the two teenagers approached the intersection of County Road 81 and Alabama Highway 22, they did not stop.”

Authorities identified the driver as 18 year-old Justin Collins, who was driving 19 year-old Wesley Stone’s vehicle at the time of the incident. Stone was a passenger in the car.

“Both teenagers were taken to Vaughan Regional Medical Center,” Reese said. “The passenger, Wesley Stone, was then airlifted to UAB in Birmingham.”

Collins was taken into custody after being released from the hospital Friday 12 p.m. Stone is listed in stable condition according to authorities.

Deputies had no comment on Stone and if there are any potential charges against him.

I bet there's not much that's going to be said about this one. I'm surprised to even see the guys photo in the paper seeing how stereotypical things are these days.

SpeakTruth, I don't know what is meant by your statement, but it sounds "Racial" to me, but maybe I'm reading it wrong. I hope this young man can get his life together, go through rehab, and then serve his entire time in jail. He has admitted the break-ins, so please save us taxpayers a trial, do your time, get off of the drugs, and maybe in your 30's you can be a law abiding citizen, not a thief. Admitting to something is the first step towards getting help. After admitting, you must be willing to accept the consequences of your actions, which means paying back society. I hope your friend, Wesley, makes a full recovery, but if he's involved in these burglaries, he too goes to prison.

I am sick and tired of all of the racial comments that come out, especially when it comes to crime in Selma, see SpeakTruth above. If the guy has admitted to the crimes, which he apparently has, then he should serve time. Let's let Judge Armstrong handle it and not fight it out in the comments section.

I agree with nowhining. I don't care about color. Crime is crime no matter who commits the act. Whites are the minority in Selma and Dallas County; so unless some come from somewhere else we won't see their mugshots as often. If people could get past the race issue, more could be done here and in the rest of the 7th Congressional District.

Drugs or no drugs, he is a thug and should have be sent to jail instead of rehab in the first place. I hope he gets the book thrown at him.

SpeakTruth, I totally agree !!! I also don't see all the usual labels certain bloggers are so quick to state when people of color are arrested . A thug is a thug no matter what race he or she maybe . People of all races also make poor choices in life and it doesn't always make them a bad person .

You all are sad!! Crime does not have a color. I see why Selma is still decades behind. Remember when Prattville was much smaller than Selma? Prattvile has some of the most racist people in Alabama, but yet black and whites get along enough to build their city. Why can't you? If it doesn't make money, it doesn't make sense. By the way money has a color--GREEN!

THAT'S RIGHT "GLADIMOVED" I AM IN THE PROCESS OF MOVING NOW TO PRATTVILLE TOO. I MEANS SELMA IS THE SAME OLD SAMEOLD , NO JOBS AND NO ONES TRYING TO BRING ANY JOBS. WHY ARE WE ABOUT TO BUILD SOMETHING THAT NOT GONNA IMPROVE SELMA, THIS IS ONLY TO PUT MONEY IN MOST OF THE CITY'S EMPLOYERS HANDS AND NOT THIS SORRY CITY

I agree with gladimoved and the statements. "If it doesn't make money, it doesn't make sense." I sometimes find humor in the bloggers who throw the race card and those who react to them. However, I wish we would all focus on the real issue and ignore all of these trivial issues.

may God`s hand be on all those involved, troubles come to people of all races...I am not without sin, so I will cast no stones.

Those of you who have issues with my statement read it again and tell me where you read racial remarks. Its not about my comment that got some of you going, its simply the fact of knowing the truth. All of you offended by it are offended cause you know the truth. You read lines that were not even there and that's because racism was on your mind and not mine. The truth is finally coming to light and it makes some of us very very mad, wonder why pari 1220, usually its trailer trash that makes comments like you made. You seem very uneducated and you are the type who usually stereotype because you know you are the average 0. I'm surprised you figured out how to use internet. Congrats to you who accept the truth, to you who don't agree swallow it. This is a blog. The End, enough said.
