Dallas County deputies have arrested a Sardis man for a Thursday night shooting at the Minter softball complex.

Deputies made the arrest Friday morning. They charged Lareico Small, 23, with assault first-degree that occurred between 7 and 8 p.m.

“Deputies responded to a call of a gunshot victim in the Vaughan (Regional Medical Center) ER about 9 p.m.,” Dallas County Sgt. John Hatfield said. “The victim said he was shot by Lareico Small when he shot into a crowd.”

The victim told investigators that Small attempted to break up a fight between two females at the softball complex. He was unable to stop the fight and that is when he went back to his vehicle and got a gun.

“When he pulled the weapon, he shot towards the crowd,” Hatfield said. “When he did, he struck the victim in the leg.”

Hatfield contacted Small’s mother to let him know that he wanted to talk to Small.

The suspect called the investigator back around 11:30 p.m. and Hatfield went to interview Small.

“Lareico admitted to shooting the victim, but his story differed from what the victim and the eyewitnesses said,” Hatfield said. “However, there is no evidence of self-defense.”

Hatfield said Small admitted to firing the weapon, but did not intend to hit the victim.

The victim is in the Vaughan Regional Medical Center where he is being treated for a shattered bone in his left leg. The victim, whom authorities would not identify, was expected to undergo surgery Friday afternoon to repair the bone.

The surgery will help the injury, but authorities expect the victim will have a life-long injury, which is why Small was charged with assault in the first degree.

Deputies placed the suspect in the Dallas County Jail under a $15,000 bond.

Authorities said Small only has traffic violations and no felony or misdemeanor priors.

Small now faces a class-b felony. If he is convicted, he could be sentenced to two to 20 years in prison and to pay a fine up to $30,000.

Sorry about this. Reico is a good guy. I think he was trying to help but made a serious mistake. Hope the person who was hit will be okay and maybe that will help reduce the charges.
