Republican Party needs to make changes

Published Thursday, June 11, 2009

Gen. Colin Powell has hit the nail on the head with regards to the direction and or misdirection the Republican Party is/has been headed. In the last few elections I have voted Democrat. Not because I am a Democrat but moreso because It was in opposition to the Republican Party's leadership and direction.

In my heart and soul I am a Republican, my father was a Republican and his father was a Republican. You see my story is the story of slaves freed by a party that believed in the inalienable rights of man and put that belief to practice and proved it in the Civil War.

I don't believe in abortion like most Republicans but I feel that everyone has to make that choice on their own. It is interesting though that the Republican leadership is staunchly against abortion, stingy when it comes to providing more funding to the schools and vehemently against regulation of any kind and claims the title of the upholders of the Christian faith (The Religious Right). This is a major contradiction, because as you and I know none of the so-called opposition to abortion is going to take care of any children, won't provide any money for Head Start or education, but will call themselves Christians.

If I remember correctly, Christ taught compassion and love for the least of us. The abortion issue has polarized our nation for too long and we as a nation are too intelligent not to resolve this issue once and for all. If we teach our young people to be responsible, thoughtful, compassionate, and moral citizens, we won't have a problem with abortion. Teach our young men and women how to have lasting and sustainable relationships instead of one-night stands or seeing each other as sexual objects. We must make this a cultural fight. This fight will entail imposing regulation on media outlets and advertisements if we are to win back the hearts, minds and souls of our nation.

Regulation on capitalism. I say it again, regulation on capitalism, unbridled greed. Capitalism in its essence is anti-Christian and anti-democracy. Because the capitalist creed espouses that the shareholders’ lust for profit supercedes the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness of the citizens in this nation. I know many of you read this and say socialism, an easy way to demonize the truth which exposes you for what you are.

I am willing and able to come back to the Republican fold, albeit it will be an all-inclusive party, one that is not run like a communist regime, where disagreement is silenced, outcast and ostracized. A party that will take the health interest, rights and needs of the American people above the greed of corporate interest. A party that is willing to educate the nation’s children, spread Christian love, respect and unity.

Until that day I will remain in the wilderness a political mercenary.

John Williams

John: Your all over the board concerning your views on the different topics, and completely misguided on the republican position on several of them. The republican party (and the nation) would probably be better served if you remained a democrat, popdukes12

As an African American, I do admit at the Republican Party has some good ideas, but until decent and civilized people stand up in the party and confront bigots in the party, the party will continue to have a diffcult time in attracting people; the party has to realize the demographics once relied on is dying off and people do not want to be associated with a party that still allow moral bankrupt people, ideas and folkways to taint their message.

Some of these so called christian conservatives in the party, especially in the south, Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia hide behind "God", but I continue to be taken back on how they can promote their so called christianity and be bigots and racist at the same time. Again, until decent people in the Republican party stand up and confront them, they will never recruit the diversity to rebuild and promote the party as a reformed alternative, not to mention compete for local, statewide or national votes.

Touch'e, Mr. Williams. You have hit the nail on the head. Unfortunately, right wing republicans will never, ever agree with you, even if the truth slaps them between the eyes.

vonnie55408: The head of the replublican party is a black man, why don't you start with him. popdukes12

Popdukes:

You just made my point. Whether the head of the party is a black man or not, the party is still saturated with moral bankrupt fools and idoits. Are you willing to support the head of the republican party to rid it of the moral bankrupt characters that are tainting the message of the party?

Assuming that you live in the Selma area, I still find it unbelievable that whites in the south still hold on the their moral bankrupt rearing even after years of evidence that their views have absolutely no credence whatsoever.

I travel to Marion/Selma area often due to property that I inherited from my father. As a person that was born and raised in Minnesota, I understand why my parents made the decision not to raise me in the southern culture, it was based on the fact that they wanted me to live around civilized folks. When I travel to Marion and Selma, again, I find it unbelievable that some whites are still so stupid, whereas they absolutely have no appreciation for humanity, and these people are still influencing the Republican party in the south. You know as well as I do that most of the rural southern conversatives could not care less about Michael Steele or what he is trying to do to reform the party.

I bet most of the "Republicans" here can't tell you what the creed is. It has been my observation that some hide behind political party identification as an excuse to be racist.

I'm an Independent with Libertarian leanings, vonnie. In fairness to the Republican Party,I don't think that moral bankruptcy is exclusive to them.Truth be told, both parties have more than their share of moral--and intellectual I might add-- bankruptcy.

vonnie55408 : Judging from the tirade you just spewed out ("bankrupt fools and idiots" and "some whites are still so stupid") it would seem to indicate that you may have serious and suppressed issues that appear to need some serious professional help. It may be some unrequited love of a parent, or the disenfranchisement from the family unit, or maybe the bully down the street kicked you dog. New procedures will allow for both oral and injectable medication that may help. popdukes12

I'm not sure about that, popdukes :),but one has to be careful about making generalizations about a race, geographic area, and a politcal party. However,I agree with the vonnie and the author of this editorial-- though I think the efforts would be fruitless, when Bush and McCain tried to reach out to black voters at the NAACP conventions they were ambushed and a black chairman doesn't seem to be helping either--The Republican party does need to try harder at wooing the minority vote. Many blacks--believe it or not-- have conservative views but don't want to align themselves with the party.I'm black, and i'm a witness to this quite often. Many of us believe in smaller government, less taxes, traditional marriage, etc, etc, all conservative philosophies, but don't want to be labeled as such.

leo7: "This fight will entail imposing regulation on media outlets and advertisements if we are to win back the hearts, minds and souls of our nation.: " Are you ready to give up on the constitution? "claims the title of the upholders of the Christian faith (The Religious Right). " Who ever said this? We uphold the freedom of ALL religions. " It is interesting though that the Republican leadership is staunchly against abortion, stingy when it comes to providing more funding ". Why should I pay for someone elses decision to have sex and children ? I paid for my own kids and so did my parents, didn't yours? What's changed except more people want something for nothing and now they have found a way by voting democrat and getting me to pay for it through my working and pursuing the old american dream. popdukes12

Popdukes:

Again, judging from your 5:10 PM comment yesterday, you continue to make my point; you still do not get it, nor are you willing to confront the real issues in the party.

I guess you need to die off too.

The Republican Party is the party of war, prison and corporate greed.

They claim to be guided by "christian principles" but do not believe in feeding the hungry, clothing the naked or loving their enemies. Mt 15:8- This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoreth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. That's the Republican Party!

They say they believe in "Trickle Down" economics when they know full well their greed will never allow something like that to happen. They're leeches, parasites who suck the wealth from this country by selling their products here but sending their factories/jobs overseas.

How can you be "pro-life" when you believe in the death penalty? Either you're in favor of life or you're not. Either you value life or you don't.

Republicans are war-mongers who send our sons and daughters to die in war without a second thought.

They want to control everything, including an individual's right to make their on decisions. They say they believe in less government but they want the government to take away a woman's freedom to choose what she wants to do with her body. They say no abortions but then won't help the woman feed or take care of the child after they force her to have it. Because Republicans will only feed, clothe and care for 1) a soldier in their army or 2) an inmate in their prisons.

Time has passed the Republican Party by. The things it really believes in cost us billions but generate nothing. The GOP is dead! Long live the Whigs!
