Meadowcraft purchased
Published Tuesday, July 28, 2009
Home Casual of Fitchburg, Wis., will purchase the Meadowcraft plant here.
Wayne Vardaman, executive director of the Selma-Dallas County Economic Development Authority said he spoke to the plant manager Andy Hewett earlier today, who confirmed the news.
Hewett did not return repeated telephone calls asking for a response. Aaron Copeland, vice president of Home Casual, also did not return repeated telephone calls about the sale.
Meadowcraft Inc. of Birmingham, the Selma plant's parent company, was forced into bankruptcy by its creditors in March. A bankruptcy court in Delaware allowed the sale of the plant.
The plant has employed about 700 people making cushions and umbrellas for patio furniture.
Currently, the plant is working 75 employees. The others are on seasonal layoffs.Selma Mayor George Evans told the city council Tuesday night during its meeting of the sale.
"We are happy about this. We appreciate what Home Casual has done," he said.
The Anniston Star reported the purchase of the Selma plant did not include purchase of Meadowcraft's other plant in Wadley.

Nice to have good economic news in Dallas County for a change. Now let's pray for Bush Hog to get the same great news.

Yeah, let's please do pray. I've been hearing rumors for months about Bush Hog but everything is a secret until it's sale (hopefully) is finalized. I am very glad for Meadowcraft's good news. Maybe all the workers will be employed by this new company. God bless

Meadowcraft messed up when they started working with Walmart. Walmart will run anybody into the ground. Unfortunately, one Walmart vendor just bought out another one in this case. So, while Meadowcraft may appear to be saved, it's just a matter of time before they go through this again as Walmart starts to run Home Casuals into the ground.

ISWYDIS, I agree 110% with your estimation of what happened to Meadowcraft. Anyone who doubts this, and has about an hour to kill, just check out the PBS/Frontline tapes on Walmart - especially the parts that deal with how they "negotiate" with suppliers:

I give Meadowcraft 3 years before they are in the same situation they are in now. One year to realize "oh cr@p, what have we done?" One year dedicated to some "we can turn this around" wishful thinking and rallying. And, one more year to finally accept their fate. Maybe 4 years if they decide to spend a year with their head in the sand.
But, at least folks will have a job for a few more years, so it's not all bad. However, I wouldn't be looking at it as long-term employment and expecting to retire from there - not unless you are already in your 60's with one foot out of the door.

It seems to me that one of the problems Selma has is that the people in Selma keep putting their mouth on their own city. We need to stop speaking on Selma's distruction and start speaking life to our city. As for all the one who are walking around putting their mouth on Meadowcraft. Why would you speak such negativity? The people who work there need their jobs just like the rest of you all do. It is clearly obvious that the people on this site must not know the God that I serve. I have faith that he will allow Meadowcraft to stay open so that people like me can continue to support our children. Let's be careful what we speak over our city. The power of life and death lie in the tongue. God bless.
